Round Rock Express News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Round Rock Express' (66-62) two-run rally in the top of the ninth wasn't enough to overcome a three-run deficit in a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Sounds (51-77) Saturday night at Greer Stadium.
Starting pitching was key for both teams through the first five innings. Express starter Scott Richmond allowed just two Sounds hits through the first five while the Express offense managed just one hit off Nashville spot starter Kyle Heckathorn.
Nashville's offense sparked in the fifth inning with a leadoff double from first baseman Hunter Morris. Left fielder Hainley Statia doubled to plate the first run of the game. Blake Lalli singled to put two men on with no outs. A fielder's choice and a single put up two more runs for Nashville, making it 3-0 Sounds. Josh Prince stole third base and came around to score on a ground out for the final run of the inning, giving Nashville a four-run cushion.
The Express got a run back in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Jim Adduci singled down the left-field line and advanced to second on a single by center fielder Engel Beltre. Alex Buchholz drew a walk to advance the runners. Left fielder Joey Butler singled to bring home Adduci and cut the Sounds lead to three.
Richmond allowed just one more hit in the sixth before being replaced by Ryan Rodebaugh to start the seventh. Richmond went 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three, but was tagged with the loss, dropping to 4-6 on the season.
Neftali Feliz came in to pitch in the eighth and allowed a one-out single, but retired the next two batters and stranded the runner.
The E-Train offense finally came to life in the top of the ninth, down 4-1. Nashville went to the bullpen for reliever Jesus Sanchez. Buchholz kicked things off with a leadoff double. Butler drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. With designated hitter Aaron Cunningham at the plate, Buchholz stole third and Butler advanced on a throwing error by Nashville catcher Robinson Diaz. Cunningham struck out for the first out of the inning. Mike Bianucci ripped a single to right field to plate two runs, cutting Nashville's lead to one. With one out and one on, Jared Hoying and Guilder Rodriguez grounded out in back-to-back at-bats to end the game.
Nashville reliever Tim Dillard picked up the win, throwing 2.2 innings in relief while Sanchez earned his sixth save of the season.
The Express and Sounds continue a five-game series inside Greer Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Sunday night. Round Rock will send RHP Josh Lindblom (8-2, 2.41 ERA) to the mound to face off against Nashville's RHP Alfredo Figaro. After the five-game set in Nashville, the E-Train returns home for the final homestand of the regular season on Thursday, August 21 to open a five-game series against Oklahoma City.
