Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Scott Savastano hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to send the Tacoma Rainiers to a 9-8 extra-innings win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Cheney Stadium on Saturday morning.
With the score tied at 8-8, catcher Jason Jaramillo led off the bottom of the 14th inning with a double. One out and one sac bunt later, Sky Sox pitcher Mike McClendon intentionally walked Abraham Almonte and Ty Kelly to load the bases.
Savastano hit a fly ball to shallow right field in Tacoma's next at-bat, plating Jaramillo from third and earning the Rainiers a series-opening win.
Tacoma originally overcame a three-run deficit and tied the score at 6-6 after posting three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Carlos Triunfel scored on a wild pitch and Almonte delivered an RBI single that brought the Rainiers within a run. Ty Kelly drove home the go-ahead run with a sac fly.
Colorado Springs briefly took an 8-6 lead in the top of the 13th inning before the Rainiers locked the score again in the bottom of the inning after scoring twice on a fielding error.
Infielder Leury Bonilla earned a winning decision after striking out one batter over a scoreless inning of work in the 14th. Starter Blake Beavan surrendered five runs on nine hits over five innings with two strikeouts and three walks issued.
The Rainiers (67-60) host the second game of a five-game series with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (61-63) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, August 17. Left-hander James Paxton (7-10, 4.35) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against Sky Sox right-hander Cory Riordan (4-4, 6.29).
