Iowa Cubs News Release

Metairie, LA - Brian Flynn pitched eight shutout innings to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs (63-65) to a 3-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (58-70) at Zephyr Field tonight. The Cubs have been shut out a league-high 14 times this season, matching the franchise record for most shutout losses in a season. The Zephyrs lead this series 2-0 and lead the season series 9-4, including four straight wins at Zephyr Field.

Flynn (6-10) scattered seven hits, all singles, while setting a career-high for innings pitched. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two. He has not allowed a run in 15.2 innings in his last two starts against the Cubs. Chris Hatcher finished the ninth inning to record his league-leading 31st save of the season.

Cubs' starter Justin Grimm (2-3) was charged with three runs on four hits while striking out eight in seven innings. It was his longest game and first quality start in five outings since joining the Cubs. He also matched his minor league season-high for strikeouts while suffering the loss.

Grimm retired the first seven batters he faced to start the game before Chris Valaika pulled a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a solo home run to get the Zephyrs on the board in the third inning. The Zephyrs added their final two runs in the fourth. Gil Velazquez singled and went to third on a double by Bryan Petersen. With one out, Kyle Jensen brought in Velazquez with a slow groundout to first base. With Rob Brantley at the plate, a pitch down and in skipped to the screen and Petersen scored from third. Brantley headed to first base thinking the ball had hit him in the foot, a result that would've sent Petersen back to third, but home plate umpire Marcus Patillo ruled the play a wild pitch. Cubs' manager Marty Pevey disputed the play and the umpires huddled, but stuck with the original call. Patillo ejected Pevey after further protest on the play. It was the seventh time this season that Pevey has been tossed from a game.

Zach Rosscup followed Grimm to the mound and allowed one hit while striking out the side in the eighth, giving the Cubs 11 strikeouts in the game. Cubs' pitchers have fanned at least 10 batters in six of their last seven games for a total of 79 strikeouts in the last 62 innings. Rosscup has fanned 10 of the 15 batters he has faced in four appearances since coming up from double-A Tennessee.

The Cubs have gone 17 consecutive innings without scoring a run in the last two games. The team's season-high for consecutive scoreless innings on offense is 19, set June 22-24 at Memphis. The Cubs' franchise record of 14 shutouts was set in 1972 and matched in 1990.

The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00. RH Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 3.00) will start for the Cubs against RH Doug Mathis (5-8, 3.85) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:40.
