Round Rock Express News Release
On paper, Saturday's game didn't look great for the Round Rock Express. Usual starter Greg Miller was out with a flu-like illness and the Express was facing the Wichita Wrangler's Jimmy Gobble, one of the best left-handed pitchers in Minor League Baseball. However, for seven innings, it looked like the Express might pull out the most improbable win of the season. Then, the Wranglers took over.
Wichita scored four times in the final two innings to take the series opener, 7-3, in front of 10,868 fans at The Dell Diamond.
Tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Express loaded the bases with one out. Chris Burke hit a fly ball to Byron Gettis in shallow right field that Gavin Wright tried to tag up on. However, a perfect throw by Gettis beat Wright and snuffed the rally.
Chad Santos homered off of losing pitcher Greg Powell (0-3) to take the lead in the eighth. Wichita (8-14) put the game away in the ninth on a home run by Tydus Meadows and three Round Rock errors.
Ian Ferguson (1-0) got the win in relief of Gobble, who allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings.
Burke extended his hitting streak to a League best 13 games with a first inning double. Round Rock falls to 5-17.
The two teams will meet again Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
