Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ONEONTA, NY --- The Vermont Expos bus broke down in Batavia on Saturday. Their offense has been broken down the entire roadtrip.
The Expos scored just one run on only three hits on Monday night in a 6-1 loss to the Oneonta Tigers in New York-Penn League action at Damaschke Field.
Vermont has gone 2-4 in the first six games of a seven-game roadtrip, but the Expos offense has scored just 10 runs and hit just .186 (37-for-199) in the six games. On the mound, Vermont pitchers have allowed two earned runs or less in four of the six games and have dropped the team ERA from 5.05 to 4.91 despite allowing 12 earned runs in a 12-1 loss at Batavia on Saturday.
On Monday, the first 11 Expos batters were retired in order before a single from Kory Casto and an RBI double to leftcenter by Josh Whitesell for a 1-0 Vermont lead in the fourth inning. But the Expos would get just one more hit in the game, a two-out triple from Lorvin Louisa in the third inning.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double of their own, then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an unearned off starter Devin Perrin (2-3), who allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings to take the loss.
Oneonta added another RBI double off reliever Warmar Gomez in the sixth inning for a 3-1 lead, then added three unearned runs in the seventh off Jim Henderson. Errors by Brad Ditter and Josh Whitesell gave the Tigers runners on first and third with one out. Henderson got a shallow flyball to left for the second out, but then gave up a two-run triple to Eric Rodland and an RBI triple to Tony Giarratano for the three unearned runs.
Brian Rogers (2-2) allowed one run on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over eight innings for the victory. He finished strong by striking out Louisa, Danny Kahr and Ja'Mar Clanton in the eighth inning.
Vermont (14-46) has now scored just 176 runs in 60 games played, an average of 2.93 runs per game. At that pace, the Expos would score only 220 runs in the 75-game season, far below the Vermont record-low 264 runs scored during the 2001 season when the Expos hit just .208 as a team.
The Expos, 3-11 overall against the Tigers and 0-6 at Oneonta, will wrap up their seven-game roadtrip at Damaschke Field on Tuesday night. After a scheduled off day on Wednesday, Vermont will open a three-game homestand with the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Thursday night at Centennial Field.
