ONEONTA, NY --- The Oneonta Tigers scored nine runs on 16 hits in a 9-3 New York-Penn League victory over Vermont on Monday night, but it was the base running of the Expos that made the difference early when the game was still in doubt at Damaschke Field.

Two Expos baserunners were picked off first, while a third missed third base on a base hit that would have gotten Vermont within two runs of the Tigers in the fifth inning. The Expos trailed 2-0 in the third when Brad Ditter was picked off after a leadoff single. Vermont would use three more hits and a walk in the inning to score a run, but the inning ended on a bases loaded flyout to deep leftcenter by Luke Montz.

Lorvin Louisa walked with one out in the third and Vermont trailing 3-1, but was quickly picked off first. After two runs for Oneonta in the fourth, the Expos got back-to-back two-out singles from Marvin Lowrance and Edgardo Baez. Steve Mortimer followed with a drive up the leftcenterfield gap for what seemed to be an easy two-run triple and a 5-3 deficit, but Baez was ruled out for not touching third and the inning was over with the Expos trailing 5-2.

The Tigers added a run in the fifth and then scored three more times in the sixth for a 9-2 lead. Expos reliever Eddie Diaz gave up a pair of singles in the sixth to plate a couple of inherited runners, but Diaz turned out to be one of the few bright spots for Vermont on the night.

After allowing the back-to-back RBI singles, Diaz struckout the next five batters he faced and struckout seven overall in just 2.2 innings of work. Starter Clyde Jenkins (1-2) had allowed three runs on five hits over the first three innings, while Francisco Sandoval six runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings.

The Expos had 11 hits on the night, but just two (both in the ninth) after the Mortimer double in the fifth inning. Mortimer and Baez both had two hits and an RBI, while Ditter and Ofilio Castro both had two hits and a run scored.

Juan Llamas was 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Oneonta (31-30), while Brooks Colvin was 3-for-5. Andrew Kown allowed two runs on nine hits over six innings for the win, while Dusty Ryan and Justice Justice both added two hits and two RBI.

The loss was just the second in eight games for Vermont at Damaschke Field this season. The Expos now head back to Centennial Field, where they will play 11 of their last 14 games of 2004.

Vermont (28-31) will continue to try and get back to the .500 mark, but will have to do so on a seven-game homestand against the two teams with the best records in the New York-Penn League. The Expos open the homestand on Tuesday with the start of a three-game series with the Auburn Doubledays (45-15), followed by a four-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats (39-23).

Note: Auburn's record does not include Monday, Tri-City's does include Monday
