Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers without a doubt have bolstered their line up for the upcoming 2011 season. In a trade announced today, the X's have acquired 1B/DH Javier Brito from the Amarillo Sox, formerly the Pensacola Pelicans, in exchange for RHP Chad Povich and a player to be named later. Brito joins Kent Sakamoto, Dustin Jones and Derek Schermerhorn in a very solid line up.
Brito, a 27-year-old native of Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, played with the Pensacola Pelicans in 2010. In 95 games, Javier hit .324 with 21 home runs, (4th in American Association) 20 doubles, while collecting 69 RBI's and 124 hits in 383 at-bats. Over two seasons in the American Association (part of 2009 with Grand Prairie Airhogs), Brito has put up some impressive numbers. In 149 games, he has recorded 191 hits with 33 home runs and 42 doubles, while maintaining a solid .321 batting average and .564 slugging percentage.
¬ÅJavier will be a tremendous addition to the middle of our line-up as he has proven to be a threat in this league with his ability to hit for power and average to drive in runs, ¬Â comments field manager Stan Cliburn. ¬Â
Brito signed as an undrafted free agent in 2002 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He spent six seasons with the Diamondbacks and made it to Tucson, their AAA affiliate in 2008. Brito spent part of the 2009 season in the Seattle and St. Louis organizations, with their AA and AAA squads, prior to joining Grand Prairie to finish the 2009 season. In his affiliated career, he hit .304 and recorded 531 hits in 532 games, with 172 of those being extra-base hits.
Povich joined the Explorers prior to the 2010 season after being released out of Spring Training with the Boston Red Sox. In 2010, Povich posted a 5-2 record in 26 appearances, 11 of them being starts. In 94 innings pitched, he recorded 83 strikeouts with a 5.17 ERA.
The Sioux City Explorers will report to Spring Training Camp on April 30, 2011! The 2011 season will kick off on May 12th, when the X's travel down to Fort Worth, TX to take on the Cats in a (4) game series, followed by (3) games against the defending American Association League Champions, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. The Explorers 2011 season home opener is Friday, May 20th versus the Fort Worth Cats in a 7:05 contest, with post-game fireworks following the game.
