Game Story

The first Brandt Centre goal of 2016 came off the stick of an opposing player as the Broncos bounced out to an early lead. Jon Martin walked out of the corner unopposed and snapped his league leading 27th goal of the season past Jordan Hollett at 7:15. The Pats couldn't get rolling on their first powerplay of the game, but followed the man advantage up with extended offensive zone pressure that turned the momentum. Despite outshooting the Broncos in the final minutes of the period, the hosts couldn't find a tying goal and went to the intermission trailing 1-0.

It only took thirteen seconds of the second period for the Pats to tie the game. Sergey Zborovskiy stretched the play out for Adam Brooks who hit Adam Berg with a saucer pass. Berg accepted the pass and snapped it by Landon Bow. The contest went back and forth with Hollett and Landon Bow forced to make some outstanding saves. The Pats penalty kill went to work twice, keeping the Broncos powerplay off the board. Continuing his red hot play, Brooks made his presence felt again by putting a brilliant backhand feed onto the tape of Austin Wagner to fire the puck to the top corner. Wagner's 14th goal of the season gave the Pats a 2-1 lead heading to the third.

Despite a pair of great chances early in the final frame, the Pats couldn't add to their lead. First it was defenceman Colby Sissons blocking a Lane Zablocki shot heading into an open net. That was followed by Bow fighting off a Berg chance in close. The Broncos rewarded their netminder's play with an evening marker just shy of eleven minutes into the period. Tyler Steenbergen busted into the Pats zone before firing a shot off the shoulder of Hollett. The rebound skipped off a body in front and right to the waiting stick of Lane Pederson who tapped the puck into the net. Just over two minutes later, for Regina Pat Canadian Arthur Miller skated onto the puck behind the Pats net and fired it out front to Scott Feser who wired in the go ahead goal. The Pats put on the press late with time ticking away and Hollett on the bench for the extra attacker. Colby Williams flicked the puck toward Bow and Sam Steel stepped in to tip it by the Swift Current goaltender, tying the game with sixty seconds left. Steel came up clutch again in the overtime frame. The second year forward grabbed the puck in his own end with less than ten seconds left and carried into the Broncos end. With just moments remaining, Steel slid the puck to Adam Brooks on the back door and the hottest player in the WHL knocked in the overtime winner with just 0.7 left on the clock sending the Pats to the 4-3 win.
