Lancaster Stormers News Release
Pitching and defense were the story of the Lancaster Barnstormers opening homestand in 2011 until the bottom of the ninth on Thursday evening.
Tommy Everidge, Lancaster's hottest hitter, blasted a mammoth two-run walkoff homer onto the walkway above the left field hillside, giving the Barnstormers a 3-1 victory over Southern Maryland at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The victory tipped the scales toward a successful homestand with the Barnstormers taking three of five.
Matt Watson opened the ninth and tore a 2-2 breaking ball from Bryan Dumesnil (0-1) into the right field corner for a double. J.C. Holt pinch ran for Watson, but the point was rendered moot when Everidge crushed the first pitch by Eduardo Morlan well beyond the left field wall for his second homer of the season.
Southern Maryland grabbed a 1-0 lead off Lancaster starter Ross Peeples in the second. Ryan Mulhern launched a full count delivery deep to left center for a one-out double, and Ben Harrison jumped on another 3-2 offering for a double over Watson's head in left to plate the run. After Christian Lopez grounded to short, Jeremy Owens yanked a single into left. Harrison hesitated around third, and Terry Tiffee cut off Watson's throw. Owens made a wide turn at first, and Tiffee was able to nail him diving back to the bag.
Peeples allowed a leadoff single in the third, then retired 10 straight Blue Crabs before being chased by consecutive singles in the sixth. Tim McNab got Peeples out of the jam and worked through the seventh. Les Walrond (1-0) retired six of seven to earn the win.
Meanwhile, Jason Waddell mastered the Barnstormers for six innings. At one point, he got 12 consecutive ground balls, but Lancaster was able to tie the game on an Alvin Colina homer to left that ended the streak with one out in the fifth inning. That would be the host club's only man to reach second base safely until Watson's double.
The Barnstormers head to Somerset to open a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark Friday at 7:05. Charlie Zink (1-0) will take the mound for Lancaster. The Patriots will counter with lefty Bill Pulsipher (0-0). The game may be heard on FoxSports Radio, 1490, WLPA or online at www.sportsjuice.com
