Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-2 on Friday night, October 26th, inside of Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. Matt Ius scored his first career goal and Shayne Barrie won in his first ever start in goal in the Western Hockey League. The 6,027 fans on hand watched as the Silvertips bumped their record to 7-6 with 14 points in the standings.
The finale of the game though was not a reflection of its beginning. The Wheat Kings scored twice within the first three minutes; the goals coming just 34-seconds apart. First, it was Tyler Dittmer getting the puck behind Barrie at 2:06 and then Brayden Schenn did the same at 2:40. But that would be all for the visiting team as the Silvertips then began to slowly regain ground on the scoreboard.
Everett's first goal came at 13:15. Kyle Beach sent the puck from his own zone into neutral ice and Zach Hamill set out to gain control. He would do so while fighting off a defender at the same time. The pair stayed together across the Brandon blue line and into the left circle. At the same time Dan Gendur was streaking up the right wing and Hamill was able to out skate his defender enough to send a cross ice pass. Gendur executed a one-time redirect that Wheat Kings goaltender Joe Caligiuri made a valiant effort to attempt saving. However, it was all for naught as the puck went in getting the home team on the board.
The Silvertips tied the game early in the second period. Their offense created pressure in and around the Brandon crease with Vitali Karamnov ultimately putting the puck by Caligiuri at 6:22; Shane Harper was scored with the primary assist while the secondary went to Jordan Mistelbacher.
The third period began with neither team taking full control. That would all change though near the mid way point. Dane Crowley scored what would be the game winner when he stopped a Brandon clearing attempt at the right point. The ensuing shot hit the left post and ricocheted into the net at 8:53. Just over one minute later it was suddenly a two goal lead. Defenseman Taylor Ellington gained control of the puck in his own end and began a beeline toward the Wheat Kings goal. It started as a partial breakaway but he eventually skated his way in front of his defender. The initial shot resulted in a save, but forward Matt Ius was following up the play and put in the rebound for his first career Western League goal at 10:00. Brennan Sonne later completed the scoring with an empty-net, shorthanded goal at 19:37 finalizing Barrie's first career victory.
The Silvertips now hit the road for their annual Eastern Conference road trip which this season takes them to the league's Central Division. On the way, however, they will stop off in Kennewick, Wash. for a contest tomorrow night against the Tri-City Americans. Game time inside of Toyota Center is set for 7:05 p.m. The team's next scheduled game is for this coming Thursday, November 1st, as they take on the distinction of being the first Western Conference team to ever play the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings. The puck is scheduled to drop in Rexall Place at 7:00 p.m. MDT (6:00 p.m. local time in Everett).
