ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush along with head coach Malcolm Cameron announced the signing of Defenseman John Wessbecker today. Wessbecker becomes the 18th player signed by Florida for the upcoming 2009-10 season. He participated in the Houston Aeros training camp of the American Hockey League prior to signing with the Everblades.

Wessbecker, 23, joins the Everblades after skating four seasons with the NCAA's University of Massachusetts-Amherst Minutemen. Last season, the Victoria, Minnesota native was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team earning distinguished scholar honors for having a 3.0 or higher GPA in all four years. The 6-foot-5 stay-at-home defenseman set career highs in assists (4), points (5), and penalty minutes (34) in his senior season.

"John is a big stay-at-home defenseman, I believe with his size and reach he will effectively keep opposing forwards out of our zone," said coach Malcolm Cameron. "He's not flashy, but he possesses a very good shot, plays physical and moves the puck well."

Throughout his four-year career, Wessbecker has appeared in 134 games totaling two goals and 10 assists, for a total of 12 points and 80 penalty minutes.

"I'm extremely excited to be going to Florida, they have a great set-up down there," said John Wessbecker. "I'm ready to see what types of opportunities await me."
