Salmon Kings Acquire And Sign Roach

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have acquired and signed defenseman Brandon Roach for the 2009-10 season from the Elmira Jackals in exchange for considerations.

The Bay Roberts, Newfoundland native spent the 2008-09 season split between the Jackals and the Quad City Flames of the American Hockey League (AHL). In 55 games in Elmira he scored 32 points (9g-23a) and amassed 18 minutes in penalties. In the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs he participated in all seven of the Jackals contests tallying four points (2g-2a) and four minutes in penalties. Roach also played in 20 games on loan to Quad City scoring one goal and adding seven assists for eight points with eight penalty minutes.

"Brandon is an AHL caliber defenseman who will step in and play a large role with our team," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "His presence instantly makes our power play credible, and his signing in Victoria will most likely benefit an area AHL team that is familiar with him."

The 6-2, 200 lb. blueliner spent the 2007-08 season in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades. In 71 games played he accumulated 34 points (12g-22) while serving 19 minutes in penalties. In three Kelly Cup Playoff games that spring he tallied one goal.

For his professional career, the defenseman has scored 74 points (22g-52a) in 146 games while tallying 45 minutes in penalties.

The 24-year-old Roach spent one season (2006-07) at school competing in the CIS where he played for the Acadia University Axemen in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 26 games in Acadia he scored seven goals (a team-high) and assisted on 10 others for 17 points while accruing 26 minutes in penalties.

Roach had a four-year junior career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) where he played for the Sherbrooke Beavers (2002-03) and Lewiston MAINEiacs (2003-04 to 2005-06). In 255 career junior games he has scored 35 goals and added 76 assists for 111 points with 94 penalty minutes. In each of the four years in junior, Roach participated in the QMJHL playoffs scoring 12 points (2g-10a) in 28 career games. This included 14 minutes in penalties. Roach also spent four months as the MAINEiacs captain during the 2005-06 season.
