Atlanta Gladiators News Release
After a tough loss on Thursday at the Germain Arena, the Gladiators looked to strike back against the Everblades on Friday night. The Gladiators took a 2-1 lead into the first period, but could not hold on as the Everblades took the lead for good on a goal with just 40 seconds left in the second period.
The Gladiators got on the board first with an early power play. With Dominic Osman in the penalty box for high-sticking, Sam Roberts found a seam through the neutral zone and hit Tim Miller streaking across the Florida blue-line. Miller cruised through the slot, and a fired a puck off goaltender Chris Bechford-Tsu and into the net to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead.
The Everblades would come back to tie the game at the 9:59 mark. Ryan Lang worked a puck from the left corner and powered to the front of the net. David Brown made the initial kick save, but Shea Guthrie fired the rebound into the top corner knotting the game up at one.
Gwinnett would strike for another special teams goal, this time while shorthanded, at the 12:12 mark. Phil Youngclaus kicked a puck up the boards to Tom Zanoski who led a 2-on-1 rush into the attacking zone. Zanoski feathered a pass to Adam Berti, and Berti slid the puck inside the right post to regain the lead for the Gladiators.
The Everblades came storming back in the second period, and tied the game at two 4:54 into the period. Chris Capraro fired a shot from the left side with plenty of traffic in front of David Brown. Brady Calla was ready on the doorstep and tapped the puck over the pad of Brown.
The Everblades took their first lead of the contest on a long blast by Phil Paquet. Brandon Buck won an offensive zone faceoff back to Paquet at the left point, and he fired a shot through traffic and just inside the right post to give the Everblades a 3-2 lead.
Mike McLean would strike back for the Gladiators at the 13:40 mark of the third. Zanoski took a tricky shot on a spin move, nearly beating Beckford-Tsu. Berti grabbed the rebound and passed the puck to McLean on the back door. McLean slid a shot into the back of the net to tie the game up at three.
Florida was able to add one more goal in the period with just 40 seconds left. Elgin Reid fired a snap shot from the left circle that was tipped by Brandon Buck. The puck bounced right to Osman, who knocked it into the net to give the Everblades the lead going into the third period.
The Gladiators were not able to battle back in the third period, as Florida scored on all three of their first 3 power plays of the period. Scott Mifsud notched a power play goal for the Gladiators and Tom Zanoski scored on a 2-on-1 with just 14 seconds left, but it was not enough to propel the Gladiators to victory. Dominic Osman struck twice on power plays to complete the hat trick, as the Gladiators fell by a final score of 7-5 to the Everblades.
The Gladiators fall to .500 on the season with a record of 26-26-4-2 and Florida improved to 32-19-4-5 with the win. The Everblades finished 3-6 with the man-advantage, while the Gladiators converted on two of four Applebees power plays.
