Florida Everblades News Release
CINCINNATI, OH - The Florida Everblades (3-2-0) opened their four-game road trip with a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (3-2-0) on Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena in front of a crowd of 946, handing Cincinnati their first loss on home ice this season.
The first-ever meeting between the Everblades and Cyclones saw the Everblades twice battle back from a goal down to even the game at two after the first 20 minutes. Cincinnati scored first on a 5-on-3 power play goal when Cory Urquhart lifted a shot over the shoulder of Everblades goaltender David Shantz from the bottom of the right circle at 7:56. The Everblades responded however just 2:01 later on Mike Angelidis' first professional goal after he picked up a rebound and lifted it past Cyclones net minder Dov Grumet-Morris from the bottom of the left circle. Brad Parsons and Vince Bellissimo picked up the assists.
Cincinnati broke the 1-1 tie on a delayed penalty when Torry Gajda deflected a point shot by Riley Day past Shantz for the lead at 17:50 of the period. Once again the Everblades responded scoring when Jon Lehun banged home a rebound with 17.5 seconds left in the frame. Chris Lee and Dustin Johner chipped in with the assists.
In the second period, the Everblades took advantage of a steady parade of Cyclones to the penalty box by tallying on a 5-on-3 power play when Chris Lee's slap shot from the top of the left circle sailed past Grumet-Morris at 5:36 to give Florida a 3-2 lead. Derek Damon and Ernie Hartlieb assisted on Lee's tally. After Cincinnati failed on a penalty shot attempt by Greg Stewart, the Cyclones tied the game at 14:54 when Jean-Michel Daoust poked a rebound past a sprawled Shantz to even the game at three.
Late in the second period the Everblades regained the lead when Lehun tallied his second goal of the night by one-time a pass by Johner past Grumet-Morris with just 1:59 remaining in regulation.
The Everblades held off the Cyclones over the final two minutes to help Shantz to his third straight win to begin the 2006-07 season after he stopped 28 of 31 shots. Grumet-Morris suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1-0, allowing the four goals on 31 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 1-for-11, while the Cyclones closed out the game 1-for-6.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, continue their four-game road trip on Friday, November 3 when they travel to Toledo, OH to take on the Storm at 7:35 p.m. The Everblades' next home game is Friday, November 10 vs. the Columbia Inferno.
