Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, VT - Holyoke's Evan Scott pitched six scoreless innings giving up just one hit while walking two and striking out seven in his first start of the summer to lead the Blue Sox to a 2-1 victory over Vermont in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Saturday night. Scott (1-0) worked in and out of trouble as the Mountaineers put a runner on third in three consecutive innings including a bases loaded one-out situation in the fifth. The win was the second in three contests for Holyoke who improve to a league best 10-4 on the season.
The Blue Sox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second thanks to a Sam Eberle sacrifice fly to score Alex Sherrod. Sherrod would the lace a two out double in the sixth to score Ronnie Freeman and give Holyoke a two run lead. A walk to Dillon Robinson would then chase Vermont starter JD Leckenby. Leckenby (Buhl, ID/Washington State) gave up two runs on five hits while walking two and fanning two going five and two-thirds in his second start of the season.
The Mountaineers would cut the lead in half in the home half of the seventh as Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, RI/URI) lead off the inning with a double. He would later score on a two out RBI triple off the left centerfield wall by Ty Young (Coatesville, PA/Louisville). Young however would be stranded in that inning.
Vermont would threaten once again in the eighth as Derek Jones (Snohomish, WA/Washington State) reached first on a dropped third strike before advancing on a Rob Griffith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sacred Heart) single. That would force Holyoke to bring in Ryan Harvey to face Russ Hopkins. Hopkins (Piscataway, NJ/Rutgers) would line out to the second baseman Frank DeSico who doubled off Jones at the bag.
Leckenby (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the summer while Scott (1-0) got the win for the Blue Sox. Harvey recorded his first save of the season getting the Mountaineers to go in order in the ninth. The two teams will meet again on Thursday July 7th as they play a double header at Mackenzie Field in Holyoke, Mass. beginning at five p.m.
Vermont (8-7) will be back in action on Monday July 4th as they host the Danbury Westerners at 6:30 p.m. You can hear all the action live on ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
Game Notes:
Russ Hopkins replaced Greg Bachman (Germantown, TN/Austin Peay) at third base in the top of the sixth. Bachman was hit on the hand with a pitch in the second inning. Derek Jones has now reached base safely in all five games he has played this summer. Rob Griffith's single in the eighth continued his streak as he has now reached base safely in seven consecutive contests.
