Keene Swamp Bats News Release

GROTON, CT - Keene third baseman Colby May (Guyton, GA/Georgia) broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field to propel the Swamp Bats past the Mystic Schooners, 1-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Saturday night at Fitch High School Field.

Keene improves to 10-6 overall on the season. Mystic falls to 8-5.

Eddie Medina (Staten Island, NY/St. John's) earned the win in relief of Keene starter Nick Neumann (Middletown, CT/Central Conn. St.) pitching three-and-two-thirds scoreless innings on three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Neumann, who was handed the no-decision, pitched five-and-one-thirds innings yielding no runs, two hits, one walk and four strikeouts (three looking).

Hunter Brown (Madison, CT/Azusa Pacific Univ.) suffered the loss in relief allowing just one hit - May's solo shot in the seventh - one run (earned) and one walk. Craig Schlitter (Guilford, CT/Bryant Univ.) was also handed a no-decision on five innings of work, no runs, two hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

Defensively, Keene turned three double plays in the contest - two behind Neumann and one for Medina - all off of the bat of Schooners catcher Joe Hudson (Odessa, FL/Notre Dame).

Scoreless through six innings, May launched his third home run of the season over the left field fence on an 0-2 breaking ball to give the Swamp Bats a 1-0 advantage late in the pitcher's duel.

Mystic held the deficit to 1-0 in the inning as left fielder Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Wheaton Coll.) gunned down Michael Burruss (Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) who tried to score from second base on a single through the left side by teammate Curt Powell (Knoxville, TN/Georgia) for the final out of the frame.

Burruss reached earlier in the inning with a one-out double to right centerfield, the only other extra-base hit in the game for either club.

The Schooners threatened in the bottom of the eight with a runner on second base and two outs but Medina forced pinch-hitter John Murphy (Seymour, CT/Sacred Heart) to fly out to left field to end the frame.

Mystic only had two runners reach second base in the entire game coming in the third and eighth innings.

Keene returns to action tomorrow night against the North Adams SteepleCats at 6:30 pm on Independence Eve at Alumni Field. Gates will open at 4 pm for fans who wish to attend the pre-Fourth of July celebration which will include fireworks after the game provided by Atlas Pyrotechnics.
