Euro Trip for Petersen, Samberg
May 4, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - The 2023 IIHF World Championships begin on May 12th, and the United States contingent heading to Europe will include former Waterloo Black Hawks Cal Petersen and Dylan Samberg, USA Hockey announced on Thursday.
This year, the annual competition will be jointly hosted by the cities of Tampere, Finland, and Riga, Latvia. Teams representing 16 countries will participate in the event, with hockey's world champion crowned on May 28th. In 2022, the United States finished fourth. Opponents in the same pool with Team USA this year include Finland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Denmark, France, and Sweden.
Petersen recently completed his sixth professional season, all with the Los Angeles Kings organization. Over that span, he has played in 101 NHL games with a 44-42-10 record, a career .905 save percentage, and a 2.92 goals-against mark. With L.A.'s American Hockey League affiliate, the Ontario Reign, Petersen's record stands at 69-68-13. He joined the Kings after a successful college career at Notre Dame.
As a Waterloo Black Hawk, Petersen made his USHL debut shortly after Christmas in 2011. Taking the ice periodically over the remainder of that season and regularly during the two years which followed, Petersen set a junior era record with 51 career victories. Twenty-seven of those wins came during Waterloo's record-setting 44-11-5 season in 2013/14. Petersen won another 10 games during 16 USHL Clark Cup Playoff games and was selected in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.
Samberg's tenure in Waterloo was brief by comparison. In 2016/17, Samberg notched a goal and an assist in six late-season appearances. That season was one of three when the Black Hawks won 40 or more regular season games (2013/14 and the recently completed 2022/23 campaign are the other instances). Samberg played in all eight Waterloo playoff games during the spring of 2017, tallying another goal and two assists.
Samberg was selected during the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets. He was a freshman at the University of Minnesota-Duluth that fall, going on to win two NCAA National Championships in three years at the school. Samberg made his NHL debut with the Jets in January of 2022. He became a regular for the club this season, playing in 63 games with two goals and six assists, as well as appearing in all five Winnipeg postseason contests.
Samberg and Petersen have both previously represented the United States at the international level. Samberg skated in the 2018 and 2019 World Junior Championships. Petersen was chosen for the U.S. squad which played in this competition during 2017 and 2021. He was also part of the Waterloo team which went to Omsk, Russia for the 2012 Junior Club World Cup.
