EVERETT, Wash.- The Everett AquaSox (34-29) took an early lead Monday night, but were unable to hold off the Eugene Emeralds (29-34), who scored five runs over the span of three innings to take game two of the series, 5-4.
Welington Dotel got things started for the AquaSox as he led off the bottom of the second with a double, before stealing third with one out. Juan Fuentes added a bloop single to right field to bring in Dotel. Anthony Phillips kept the momentum going as he doubled off the right field wall. Fuentes scored all the way from first on the play to give the AquaSox a 2-0 lead.
Joey Railey led off the top of the fifth with a single to left. Jason Codiroli added a one-out single to move Railey to second. Rincon tied the game with a two-out, two RBI double - scoring Railey and Codiroli to knot the game up at 2-2.
Phillips provided a spark in the bottom of the fifth to give the Frogs the lead back. Phillips homered to right-center to put the AquaSox ahead 3-2.
The Emeralds came right back in the top of the sixth. Jason Hagerty and Railey provided back-to-back singles with two outs to begin the rally. Dean Anna doubled to bring in both Hagerty and Railey to give the Ems a 4-3 lead.
Eugene added another run in the top of the seventh on an Edinson Rincon solo homer to extend the lead to 5-3.
Everett cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh when Mario Martinez singled with two outs and was followed by a Gerardo Avila double to put runners at second and third. Dotel drove in Martinez with a single to cut the lead to 5-4.
Chris Fetter (S, 6) began his second inning of work in the bottom of the ninth. The Eugene closer retired the AquaSox in order to pick up the save and secure the 5-4 victory.
The AquaSox and Emeralds will play the series finale Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Chris Kirkland (3-4, 4.92 ERA) will get the start for the AquaSox in the final game of the homestand.
Following the game on Tuesday, the AquaSox will go on a short three-game road trip before returning home for their final homestand of the season.
