Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

The Tri-City Dust Devils helped themselves out on Monday night as they won a tense battle against the Yakima Bears 7-6. The win helps Tri-City increase their lead over Boise and Spokane and elimates Yakima from playoff contention.

The Dust Devils were able to get on the board first thanks to Bo Bowman. The Dust Devils' first baseman singled to start the third inning and scored on a wild pitch to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead. The Bears took the lead in the third inning as Zach Varnell and Dan Kaczrowski both singled to put runners on with two outs. Ryan Wheeler hit a double into left field to score both runners and make the game 2-1.

The Dust Devils took the lead back in the bottom of the inning as Joey Wong singled to lead off the inning. Wong was thrown out on a Tim Wheeler fielder's choice, but Wheeler was moved to second by Jeremiah Sammy on a single. Kevin Clark doubled to send Wheeler home and tie the game. Sammy scored on a wild pitch and Clark advanced to third base. Bowman scored Sammy on a single up the middle to make the game 4-2. Jose Gonzalez singled to center field to bring Bowman home and give the Dust Devils a three-run lead.

Starter Josh Hungerman gave up his last run when Roberto Rodriguez singled off of a ball that dropped between Wheeler, Shane Lowe and Wong in the outfield, followed by a triple by Kaczrowski which occurred when Kent Matthes missed a diving catch in right field. Rodriguez was driven in by Wheeler on a ground out off of reliever Rod Scurry cutting the lead to 5-4.

Bowman gave the Dust Devils a little extra cushion in the fifth inning as he drove in Kevin Clark for his third hit and second RBI of the game, extending the lead to 6-4. Bowman struck again in the sixth inning to give the Dust Devils bullpen a little more help. Joey Wong led off with a single which dropped in the left-center gap. Wong moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Wheeler and Jeremiah Sammy was walked. Kevin Clark was also walked to to load the bases. Bowman drilled a ball to deep right field for his third RBI giving Tri-City a 7-4 lead.

The Bears were able to score again in the seventh inning. Varnell started the inning off with a single and advanced when Roberto Rodriguez was walked. The bases were loaded when Kaczrowski reached on an error by Joseph Sanders. Varnell scored on ground out by Gerson Montilla and Wheeler drove in a run to make the game 7-6.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Dust Devils had trouble finishing the game. Rodriguez reached on an error and Kaczrowstki singled. Wheeler was intentionally walked and Rhett Ballard was called in to finish the game for Tri-City. Ballard struck out Matt Davidson, and on his second pitch to Matt Helm, the outfield sprinklers came on. Ballard was not rattled as he struck out Helm to end the game.

Bowman went 3-3 with three RBI and two runs on the night to lead the Dust Devils.
