Ethan Prow a Hobey Baker Award Top Ten Finalist

March 17, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

Former Des Moines Buccaneer Ethan Prow has made the 2016 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Top Ten Finalists and is one of seven players to receive the honor that is a USHL alum. The Hobey Baker Award is handed out to the top NCAA Division I men's hockey player and is comparable to the hockey version of the Heisman Trophy.

Prow is a senior and captain for the St. Cloud State Huskies and is the only nominee to make the Hobey Baker Top Ten list from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Under Prow's leadership SCSU is 29-8-1 this season, finished 2nd in the NCHC and this weekend will play for the conference tournament title at the Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis, MN. St. Cloud has made the NCAA tournament the three previous years and as they are currently slated to be a #1 seed, the Huskies will make the dance all four years of Prow's career at SCSU.

Prow (8-27-35) currently leads the nation this season in Division I points from a defenseman, four clear of Notre Dame's Jordan Gross. Prow is also just four points away from joining St. Cloud State's century club with 96 points (19-77-96) in his four year NCAA career. He has become a fan favorite and a hometown hero to the fans at St. Cloud State as he hails from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, less than ten minutes away from St. Cloud.

We asked Ethan his thoughts on making the cut to the Hobey Baker Top Ten and not surprisingly he remained humble and appreciative. "It's just a great honor to be a part of the Hobey Baker Award and all its history."

Prow scored 10 goals and 46 points in 115 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. He was also seen as a leader of the Buccaneers, being named an Alternate Captain.

There's a lot of USHL flavor to this year's Hobey Baker Award Top Ten Finalists, as six other nominees have USHL experience. Michigan's JT Compher (Team USA), Kyle Connor (Youngstown), and Tyler Motte (Team USA), Boston College's Thatcher Demko (Team USA), Yale's Alex Lyon (Omaha) and the University of New Hampshire's Andrew Poturalski (Cedar Rapids) also played in USA Hockey's only Tier 1 junior league.

Prow finished 5th in fan voting in Phase I of the Hobey Baker Award fan voting with 4,773 votes, helping the committee narrow the field down to ten. Phase II of the voting has begun and will help shape the outcome as the field is whittled down to three. In early voting, Prow leads the vote with over twice the number of votes as 2nd place Alex Petan of Michigan Tech.
