Pitlick and Paulovic Register Four Points in Loss to Waterloo

MUSKEGON, MI - Rem Pitlick and Matej Paulovic scored two goals and notched two assists, but the Muskegon Lumberjacks fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks in a high scoring affair 6-5, ending the Lumberjacks four game home winning streak.

The high scoring affair started early, with the Lumberjacks breaking through 3:51 into the first period. Matej Paulovic won the face-off right back to Rem Pitlick, who fired home his 39th goal of the season to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead. Less than one minute later, Muskegon doubled their lead with a power play goal from rookie forward Collin Adams. Pitlick and Paulovic registered the assists on Adams 21st goal of the season.

However, the Black Hawks responded with two goals forty seconds apart. Yuri Terao netted his 12th of the season to cut the Lumberjacks lead in half. Quickly after, Zach Yon leveled the game at two goals apiece. The final 11 minutes of the first period would remain scoreless powered by 16 saves from Lumberjacks goaltender Devin Cooley.

Less than thirty seconds into the second period, the Lumberjacks grabbed back the lead. Pitlick netted his second of the game after he one-timed a perfect pass from Adams. It was Pitlick's 40th goal of the season, making his the fourth player in USHL Tier One history to register forty goals. Four minutes later, Muskegon once again doubled their lead. Paulovic received a breakout pass from Anthony Del Gaizo, and netted his 14th goal of the season to give Muskegon a 4-2 lead. Waterloo responded with a shorthanded goal from Nick Swaney to cut the Lumberjacks lead to one. However, Paulovic netted his second of the game from Pitlick to give Muskegon another two-goal lead. With less than one minute to go in the second period, Jake Ryczek made it a 5-4 game, with a wrist shot from the high slot, to cut the Black Hawks deficit to one heading into the third period.

Waterloo leveled the game at five goals apiece seven minutes into the third period, when Yon netted his second of the game. The Black Hawks continued to pressure the Lumberjacks and broke through with one second left to defeat the Lumberjacks. Swaney knocked home a rebound after a Liam Pecararo shot, to give Waterloo the 6-5 victory.

Pitlick and Paulovic led all players in scoring with four points each, and Cooley recorded a career high 47 saves in the loss. The Muskegon Lumberjacks (22-23-6) would look to rebound tomorrow when they host the Youngstown Phantoms (24-19-9) for the start of a weekend series. Puck will drop at 7:15 p.m.
