Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD - With the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs seeking insurance on their infield, they turned to a familiar face from last season as they traded for and signed infielder David Espinosa for the rest of the season on Tuesday evening. Espinosa comes to the Blue Crabs from the Grand Prairie (TX) Air Hogs of the American Association in exchange for future considerations.

The Venezuelan enters into his second stint with the Blue Crabs after playing in 14 games with Southern Maryland at the end of last season. In those games, Espinosa batted .340 with a homer and seven RBI.

Just as he did last season, Espinosa joins the Blue Crabs after finishing up his season with the Grand Prairie. In 2011, Espinosa hit .324 with six homers and 60 RBI in 100 games as he helped the Air Hogs to the American Association Title with an 8-5 game-five victory on Monday night over the St. Paul Saints.

David is a former first-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds and has also spent time in the Tigers and Mariners farm systems. He reached as high as triple-A Toledo while with the Tigers from 2005-2007. He is a career .269 hitter with 81 homers and 446 RBI in an 11-year professional career.

To make room for Espinosa, the Blue Crabs placed infielder Bridger Hunt on the disabled list. Hunt had a fine season for Southern Maryland batting .281 with two homers and 15 RBI in 30 games and 96 at-bats.

The Blue Crabs take on the Ducks at Regency Furniture Stadium in game two of their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05. Southern Maryland will send right-hander Joe Gannon (2-2, 5.44 ERA) to the hill against righty Josh Banks (1-0, 2.25 ERA) for the Ducks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
