Esks' Mobley and Payton named CFL Stars of Week #1

(Edmonton) Edmonton Eskimo defensive standouts Singor Mobley and Elfrid Payton have been named CFL Defensive Player of the Week and Lineman of the Week respectively for their performances in the Esks impressive win over Calgary last Friday.

A fifth year veteran, Mobley has emerged as one of the CFL's top defenders. Against the defending Grey Cup champions, Mobley had two interceptions, two defensive tackles, one special teams tackle and one pass knock down. In 2001, Mobley finished with 100 tackles (4th best in the CFL).

Elfrid Payton, who signed as a free agent with Edmonton on June 12th of this year, created havoc for the Stampeders all night and finished with three sacks and three defensive tackles. Payton, a five time CFL All-Star, is currently fourth on the CFL's All-time list with 135 quarterback sacks, just 4.5 sacks behind Hall of Famer James "Quick" Parker.

The Eskimos host the expansion Ottawa Renegades tomorrow (Thursday) night in the regular season opener at Commonwealth Stadium. Gates open at 6pm. Kick-off at 7pm. The game will be telecast on TSN (local blackout in effect). The first 5,000 fans receive a free 630CHED/ Eskimos magnetic schedule.
