Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) - The Canadian Football League announced Eskimos running back Shakir Bell and defensive end Marcus Howard as two of the three top players of the week for Week 4 for their performances in Friday's 23-12 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks.
Bell recorded 154 all-purpose yards, including 144 yards on 18 carries - the most recorded by a single player in a game this season. Friday's win marked Bell's first regular season game in the CFL.
A five-year veteran, Howard is the first defensive player to earn the league honour this season. He recorded two quarterback sacks on back-to-back plays. One sack resulted in an 11-yard loss and the other was a five-yard sack where he forced a fumble. Howard also added four defensive tackles. The former University of Georgia Bulldog is tied for the league-lead in sacks with four.
CFL top players of the week are chosen by a panel of judges including former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
