Edmonton Elks News Release
Edmonton (1- 4) aims for it's first back to back wins since October 30th and November 6th 2009 when they host Toronto (3 - 2) to celebrate both 1970's Retro and the Wall of Honour induction of Ron Estay (1973 - 1981), a Canadian Footbal Hall of Fame defensive tackle who helped Edmonton win five Grey Cups during his time with the Green and Gold.
For the first time since June 28th, 2002, the Eskimos take to the field without Danny Maciocia as Offensive Coordinator, Head Coach or General Manager/Director of Football Operations. The Esks recorded their first win of '10 last Friday, 28 - 25 over BC, but the biggest news of the week was made Saturday when the club fired Maciocia.
The Esks (1 - 4) host a rebuilt, retooled and suddenly respectable Toronto Argonauts (3- 2) who have two of their wins against Western opponents and are sitting second in the CFL East.
Edmonton made significant strides last week in the 28 - 25 win over BC, most notably on defence which was helped by the return of Adam Braidwood, and the play of ball hawking defensive back Chris Thompson with a pair of interceptions and now boasts a CFL leading five picks. Thompson, reacquired in an off-season trade with Hamilton, has interceptions in four straight games.
Edmonton will be facing rookie QB Cleo Lemon and running back Corey Boyd, who's getting serious consideration for rookie of the year honours with 484 yards rushing on 75 carries thus far.
The Esks are 2- 0 in their last two games with Toronto at Commonwealth, but 4 - 6 in their last ten against the Boatmen dating back to 2005.
Edmonton travels to Calgary next Sunday, the first of three meetings against the Stamps in less than a month against their provincial rivals.
