PL Idaho Falls Chukars

Errors Make I.F. Comeback Irrelevant

August 27, 2010 - Pioneer League (PL)
Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Idaho Falls Chukars lost to the Helena Brewers 14-6 Friday night in the opener of a four-game series between the two at Melaleuca Field. The Chukars are now 7-19 in the second half and 23-41 overall.

Chukars' starting pitcher Brennon Martin yielded five runs in the second inning, but only one was earned. Two more unearned runs in the fourth inning put the Brewers in front 7-0. After giving up a solo home run in the sixth inning, Martin exited with two out and two on. Both of those runs would come in to score as Martin's final line was five and two thirds innings pitched, 13 hits allowed 10 runs given up, only four of which were earned. The Brewers put another run across in the seventh inning before the Chukars offense finally found a spark.

In the first six innings the Chukars had two hits, both by Tom Zebroski. In the seventh inning, Zebroski would connect again on a two-run double and he would be followed by a two-run Justin Trapp double as part of a six-run inning. Almost all of that damage coming off of reliever Jose Oviedo, who was charged with five earned runs in one inning. The Brewers quickly put any hope of an I.F. rally to rest when they plated three more runs in the eighth inning.

The loss went to Martin, but the pitcher behind him struggled even more. Allen Caldwell had both of his inherited runners score, and then gave up four earned runs of his own in two and a third innings. Jason Mitchell finished up the game on the mound with a shutout ninth inning. Brewers' starter Stosh Wawrzasek pitched five shutout innings for the win and Ryan Bernal earned his first save of the season after tossing the final three innings of the game.

The Chukars were outhit 20-8 in the game and Idaho Falls committed six errors. The I.F. offense was led by Zebroski, who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Defensively, half of the six errors were committed by the Chukars' outfielders.

The Chukars and Brewers continue the series Saturday night at Melaleuca Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:15.
