Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Robbie Erlin's career night did not go to waste. The lefty pitched seven innings of two-hit shutout ball with ten strikeouts, and the Pelicans broke through with a pair of runs in the eighth as they beat the Potomac Nationals 2-0 at BB&T Coastal Field.
Erlin, the fourth-ranked prospect in the Rangers system according to Baseball America lived up to his billing. The Santa Cruz, CA native had the longest outing of his professional career and his ten strikeouts were also a career high. He retired the last 12 batters he faced, including setting down the heart of the Potomac order on strikes in the seventh. Erlin's double-digit strikeout total is also the most by any Pelicans' hurler this season.
After unsuccessful rallies in the sixth and seventh against Potomac starter Paul Demny, the Birds finally got on the board in the eighth. Mike Olt got things started against reliever Adam Olbrychowski with an infield single under the glove of third baseman Stephen King. Jared Hoying singled Olt to second and two batters later, Zach Zaneski stroked a two-out single to right center to plate Olt and snap the deadlock. Santiago Chirino was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Travis Adair followed with a walk to force in an insurance run. Olbrychowski (1-1) struck out Ryan Strausborger to strand three, but the damage was done.
Joe Ortiz entered the game in the eighth in relief of Erlin and went through the inning 1-2-3. The lefty improved his record to 2-1 after a scoreless ninth in which he shook off a leadoff infield single by Jose Lozada before retiring the next three batters to end it.
Demny and Erlin were outstanding in this pitchers' duel, but both took no-decisions. Demny tossed seven shutout frames for the Nationals, allowing five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Olt had two hits for the Pelicans and scored the game-winning run on Zaneski's hit in the eighth. Chris McGuiness and Travis Adair both extended their on base streaks to 11, the longest such string by a Myrtle Beach player this season.
The seven-game homestand continues on Tuesday night with game two of the four-game series against the P-Nats. Right-hander Barret Loux gets the ball for the Pelicans while southpaw Mitchell Clegg will go for Potomac. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
