Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Keys won a rain-shortened game 7-2 over the Carolina Mudcats at Harry Grove Stadium in a game that saw relief pitcher Brandon Erbe become the Keys' all-time strikeout leader.
Erbe received the win in relief as his 264th strikeout brought him to the top of the Keys all-time leaderboard. Erbe's 17th win as a Key puts him at third all-time in that category. Erbe last pitched for Frederick in 2008 and originally made his Frederick debut as a 19-year old with the Keys in 2007. Erbe is back with the Keys as a 24-year old after undergoing elbow surgery in the fall of 2010.
The Keys, after tying the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning, scored six times in the fifth and sixth inning to take their 7-2 lead before the rain forced the game short.
After the Keys could do nothing against starting pitcher Danny Salazar in the first three innings, mustering just one baserunner, they finally got through against relief pitch Kyle Blair.
With Carolina leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Keys stormed out to a 5-2 lead, scoring four times in the inning against Blair. Trent Mummey led off the inning with a double and then with Johnny Ruettiger reaching on a walk, Jeremy Nowak crushed a pitch over the right field wall for a three-run homerun.
The next batter, Aaron Baker, made it back-to-back homeruns when he hit his seventh homerun of the year, a towering shot over the right-center field wall to make it 5-2 Keys.
The Keys scored two more times in the next inning against Blair, but in a bizarre manner. After Blair walked the first two batters in the inning and a sac bunt put them in scoring position, a wild pitch from new reliever Shawn Armstrong brought in a run to make it 6-2.
After a walk to Mummey put runners on first and third, the Mudcats had Mummey in a rundown when he tried to steal second. In the process, the runner from third, Joe Oliveira, crossed home plate without even drawing a throw. To top it all off, the Mudcats couldn't get Mummey out in the rundown after dropping the baseball.
With the rains coming down hard in the seventh, that's when the decision was made to make it official.
The Keys are back in action Friday night at home against the Salem Red Sox in what should be an eventful weekend. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a replica championship ring courtesy of Keeney & Basford Funeral Home.
Then on Saturday, phenom prospect Dylan Bundy will make his Frederick Keys debut.
For tickets call the Keys box office at 301-815-0133.
LHP Trent Howard (1-0, 2.91 ERA) is expected to start against LHP Drake Britton (1-5, 7.15 ERA).
