August 3, 2004 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE â The Ems showed signs of life with timely hitting and pitching on Monday night in a 6-2 win over the visiting Spokane Indians. The Emeralds never trailed after their first at-bat and more importantly avoided any fielding miscues. It proved to be a winning combination yet it wasn't enough to prevent the Ems from losing their fifth series in a row, falling 3-2 in the homestand and 6-4 in the seasonal matchup with Spokane.
RHP Clayton Hamilton in his first league start gave up one run and two hits in the top of the first but calmed down to log three innings without allowing another run or hit. 2B Tug Hulett began the game with a leadoff double for the Indians and CF Michael Mask drove him in with a single up the middle. On Friday Hamilton logged two innings and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits, with 3 strikeouts. RF Ernesto Garay picked up the Ems first hit with an infield single; Garay stole second, his first in the Northwest League. 2B Brett Burnham walked to become the Ems second base runner. C Colt Morton gave the Ems the lead with a one-out two-run double. LF Billy Hogan backed Morton's hit with a triple that hit just below the scoreboard in right-center. Morton scored on the play, giving the Ems a 3-1.
Garay picked up his second infield hit and Eugene's fourth of the night in the second. Garay got a good jump on a SS Sean Kazmar single and moved to third. Spokane's starter LHP Justin Lensch would escape the second without giving up a run. Eugene loaded the bases with no outs in the third with back-to-back walks and a single by 3B Lachlan Dale. Morton scored on a 1B Orlando Diaz sacrifice fly. DH Trino Aguilar notched his sixth RBI of the season with a run-scoring single to extend the Ems lead to 5-1. CF Chris Kolkhorst picked up his second RBI with the third single of the inning. Garay got his third hit of the game with another single, but the Ems would end the third with a 6-1 lead. The Indians would add one more in the ninth. RHP Jose Cespedes would pick up his first win of the season after working two scoreless innings, the fourth and fifth.
