Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore. --The Volcanoes dropped the series to the Eugene Emeralds in a 7-6 decision in front of 3,310 at Volcanoes Stadium on Friday night.
John Riley pounded a go-ahead home run out of the park in the bottom of the third frame to give Salem-Keizer a 4-3 advantage going into the fourth inning, but it wouldn't be enough to tie the series at one game apiece.
Despite tossing a scoreless third and fourth inning, starter Logan Webb ran into a jam in the fifth, when he allowed back-to-back singles from Eloy Jiminez and Andrew Ely. Webb hit Ian Rice with a pitch to load the bases and Jiminez would score off of a fielding error to erase the Volcano advantage.
In the top of the sixth inning, Sutton Whiting singled off of reliever David Owen (1-2, 3.18) and stole second and third base, setting himself up to score when Donnie Dewees hit a grounder to centerfield. Dewees scored off of a Jiminez sacrifice fly to give the Emeralds a 6-4 advantage going into the seventh, where they would score their final run when Alex Bautista grounded out to score Andrew Ely.
Salem-Keizer looked to rally in the sixth, when John Riley drew a walk to lead off the frame against Adbert Alzolay (4-2, 2.18). Mark Nelson and Christian Lichtenthaler both singled to load the bases and Brad Moss reached on a walk, scoring Riley.
Reliever Corey Taylor spun scoreless eighth and ninth innings, but the Volcanoes would not bring another man home to force extra frames.
Player of the Game: John Riley paced the Volcanoes offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a go-ahead home run in the third inning. He also added two RBI's and drew a walk.
Up Next: On the final evening of the 14th-Annual Cancer Awareness Weekend, the Volcanoes will wrap up their series with Eugene before heading north to take on the Everett AquaSox. Luis Pino (3-0, 0.33) will make the start, looking to pick up his fourth win of the season for Salem-Keizer.
