
Emeralds Take a Swing at Pediatric Cancer

EUGENE, OR - Too often a family receives devastating news that their child has developed some form of cancer. Each year over 15,000 children are diagnosed with this truly awful disease. On Sunday, June 26 the Eugene Emeralds are stepping up to take a swing at Pediatric Cancer by hosting their second Pediatric Cancer Awareness Night at PK Park.
The purpose of this night is to help raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research and the Doernbecher Foundation. The Doernbecher Children's Hospital is home to the only comprehensive center for pediatric cancer in Oregon. Before and during the game, fans and staff members will be invited to shave their heads in solidarity with those young patients who lose their hair while undergoing cancer treatments. Employees from Kristie's Barbershop in Eugene (20 W 17th Ave) will be set up by the First Base entrance will be on hand to provide the summer trim. Fans should be sure to stick around after the game, as players and coaches from your Eugene Emeralds will take to the barber chairs and show their support. All donations made will be given to the Doernbecher Foundation.
The Kendall Community Spotlight is the Angel Hair Foundation. Angel Hair is a private, nonprofit organization that reaches out to kids in in Oregon who have lost their hair due to medical illness. The foundation provides the funding needed to purchase an "Angel Hair System," a superior quality hair prosthesis, for kids and teens. An Angel Hair System provides kids with confidence and self-esteem, which allows kids to feel like themselves while enduring medical conditions that causes hair loss, such as cancer and alopecia.
Fans should be sure to come down to PK Park dresses in their best Ems gear and a splash of gold to show their support for Pediatric Cancer Awareness. Gates open at 4 p.m. for a 5:01 game start. The Emeralds will be facing off against the Spokane Indians.
The Eugene Emeralds are the short-season Class A team of the Chicago Cubs. In 2015, six of the top 30 Cubs prospects spent time in Eugene including Ian Happ, Donnie Dewees and Eloy Jimenez. With 61 years, the Emeralds are the longest tenured and only founding member remaining in the Northwest League.
