Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore. -- The Tri-City Dust Devils put the Volcanoes on simmer in an 8-6 loss to start off the five-game series. Tri-City third baseman Boomer White went 4-for-5 with three doubles and drove in four runs in the Dust Devil victory. The win went to right handed pitcher Will Stillman, while the loss goes was handed to pitcher Hengerber Medina. Despite the defeat, third baseman Chase Compton had a solid game, recording four RBIs.
The Volcanoes were coming off of a successful series in Boise against the Hawks where they took two of three games. The previous series against the Hillsboro Hops had the same result with a 2-1 Volcanoes victory. The Salem-Keizer squad entered the night sitting at a 4-2 tie atop the Northwest League with the Eugene Emeralds.
After bringing its hot bats back from Boise, Salem-Keizer did not waste any time putting runs on the board. In the first inning, the Volcanoes loaded the bases with no outs; however, it began to look grim as two consecutive outs left the Volcanoes asking why. Luckily, Compton was able to pick up his teammates, ripping a double down the left field line, scoring shortstop Manuel Geraldo and left fielder Jean Angomas.
The Dust Devils were able to make a quick rebuttal in the second inning when second baseman Jose Savinon hit a low line drive single into center field, scoring shortstop Chris Baker from second base. Volcanoes pitcher Hergerber Medina was then able to rebound, striking out the next batter on a sharp curveball and ending the inning.
Left fielder Aldemar Burgos started the third inning with a lead off triple into the right center field gap, after which he was promptly driven in by a double to right field from White. Yet, once again, Medina was able to stop the bleeding, shutting down the next three batters, which left the score all tied up at two runs a piece.
The Dust Devils did not let up in the fourth, recording five base hits and a walk on Medina. With one out, left fielder Aldemar Burgos hit a sharp groundball to a diving Compton, who was unable to get enough force on the throw to get the out at first, ultimately driving in a run and keeping the bases loaded. White stayed hot, hitting a rocket to left field to clear the bases with a double; the third baseman was then able to advance to third on the throw home. Dust Devils' catcher Kyle Overstreet knocked home White with a well placed bloop into shallow left field. At that point, Manager Kyle Haines had seen enough, deciding to pull Medina and replace him with right hander Kendry Melo, who was able to close out the long fourth inning.
The Volcanoes showed some life in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left from Geraldo. Next, Angomas hit a long fly ball off the left field fence, advancing Geraldo only one base due to the risk of the ball being caught. First baseman John Riley then stepped up to the plate just to take another fastball to the ribs and load the bases for the Volcanoes. With two outs, Compton lined a single into center field, scoring two more runs for Salem-Keizer. Pena followed up with a seeing eye ground ball over the pitcher's mound, scoring the fifth run for the Volcanoes.
The Volcanoes lead off the sixth inning with two quick singles from second baseman Kevin Rivera and Geraldo. Angomas then hit into a fielder's choice, leaving runners at first and third. Manager Kyle Haines had Angomas attempt to steal second, and an errant throw left an easy stroll home for Pena, leaving the score at 6-7.
The Dust Devils were able to tack on another run to their lead in the eighth when White hit his third double of the night, followed by a single from Overstreet. This left the Dust Devils with an 8-6 lead going into the the bottom of the eighth that carried through to the end of the game, shutting the door on the Volcanoes' hopes of victory.
What started as a rout of the Volcanoes soon became a tight contest. The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes look to get one back in the second game of the series against the Tri-City Dust Devils. The game will once again be held at Volcanoes Stadium at 6:35 p.m.
