June 10, 2023 - Northwest League (NWL)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
The Emeralds split a double-header this afternoon against the Dust Devils. They dropped game 1 by a final score of 2-1 and were able to bounce back and win game 2 by a final score of 6-5. They now have a 28-28 record on the year and currently sit 3 games out of 1st place in the Northwest League. The Ems still trail this series 3 games to 2.
The Dust Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game 1. Arol Vera was up to bat with runners at 2nd and 3rd in the 3rd inning and delivered a clutch hit to give the Dust Devils the 2-0 lead. Miguel Yajure was the starter tonight for Eugene. It was his first start as an Emerald, as he is currently on a rehab assignment with the Ems. He was in San Jose for a handful of starts before being moved up to join the Ems. He went 3.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 earned runs and struck out 4. It was a solid start for Yajure, but the Vera base hit proved to be enough offense for Eugene.
The Emeralds bats were cold for most of the 1st game, but in the bottom of the 7th Logan Wyatt opened up the inning with a solo home run to bring the deficit to just 1 run. The next 3 batters weren't able to reach base as they went down in order to close out the 1st game. The Emeralds outhit the Dust Devils 5-3 in that game, but they just couldn't come up with the clutch hits as they finished the ballgame 0-3 with runners in scoring position.
Game 2 got underway a little bit more than 40 minutes after the conclusion of the 1st game. The Emeralds were able to strike first in the game. It was the first time the Emeralds scored the 1st run of the ballgame this series. Victor Bericoto launched an absolute moonshot out to left field for his 2nd home run of the series.
In the 3rd inning the Emeralds were able to extend their lead. Dilan Rosario started off the inning by reaching on an error and Ghordy Santos followed it up with a walk. Grant McCray advanced the runners and Brett Auerbach was able to draw a walk. Victor Bericoto was able to get his 2nd RBI of the game as he hit a pop-out to center field that scored Rosario. The next batter, Logan Wyatt was up to bat when a ball got past the catcher and Ghordy Santos was able to hustle home and score to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the 4th inning the Dust Devils were able to answer back however. They strung together a series of base hits and were able to push 3 runs across the board to tie the game up at 3-3. The Emeralds held them scoreless in the 5th inning but in the top of the 6th inning Casey Dana delivered a two out RBI-Single that scored Gustavo Campero to give the Dust Devils the lead. The next batter, Joe Stewart, ripped a double into the outfield that scored Dana and they quickly took the 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th inning catcher Max Wright led the inning off with a solo home run out to right center field. It was his first home run of the year and great to see him finally get one under his belt after he had come close a couple of times the past few weeks. Dilan Rosario followed it up with a single and Ghordy Santos followed that up with a walk. It was Santos' 3rd walk of the ballgame. That put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs as the Ems trailed by one run.
That brought up the leadoff man Grant McCray. McCray dropped down a perfectly executed bunt and both runners were able to advance. McCray was thrown out at 1st but he did his job to perfection. The next batter Brett Auerbach was able to slap a ball to the outfield and Rosario was able to tag up on the play and score to tie the game up at 5-5. With two outs that brought up Victor Bericoto with a runner at third. Bericoto hit a pretty routine ground ball to the 3rd basemen Casey Dana, but Dana wasn't able to field it cleanly and Bericoto was able to hustle down the line and get into 1st base. Santos hustled home to score on the play and that gave the Ems the 6-5 lead late in the ballgame.
Nick Morreale pitched the final 2.1 innings for Eugene and came in to close things down in the 9th. After a 2-out single from Gustavo Campero, Morreale was able to retire pinch hitter Gabe Matthews to get the final out of the inning. It was an impressive performance from Morreale as he earned his 4th win of the season.
It was a big win for Eugene as they're trying to stay in the hunt for the 1st half title. They sit a few games out of 1st place and they'll have another chance to make up more ground tomorrow in the series finale against the Dust Devils. If they win tomorrow, it'll be a series split for the Ems before they head up north a couple of hours to take on the Spokane Indians for a 6-game series. First pitch tomorrow afternoon is set for 12 P.M.
