Eugene Emeralds News Release
The Emeralds dropped the series finale to the Vancouver Canadians by a final score of 7-3. The Ems split the series against Vancouver with each ballclub winning 3 games. The Emeralds now move to 26-25 on the season and sit a game and a half out of first place in the Northwest League.
Vancouver jumped out to a big lead in the 1st inning off of starter Matt Mikulski. With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Alex De Jesus was able to connect with a baseball and drive it over left fielders Carter Howell's head. 2 runs scored and Vancouver took the early lead. The very next batter, Gabby Martinez, followed it up with a 2-run home run that gave Vancouver the 4-0 lead in the 1st inning.
In the 2nd inning Vancouver was able to extend their lead. After 2nd baseman Michael Turconi led the inning off with a basehit the leadoff man for Vancouver, Alan Roden, roped a single in the outfield for the RBI. The Canadians held the 5-0 lead after 2. In the 4th inning Michael Turconi got in the on the action again, hitting a Sac-Fly RBI that scored Josh Kasevich and extended their lead to 6.
Eugene did answer back in the 6th inning. Grant McCray hit a 1-out triple and the very next batter, Carter Howell, was able to get a basehit in the outfield and score Grant McCray. Howell was incredible this week after joining the team in Vancouver. He hit 11-24 with 4 RBI's, 5 runs and a stolen base. He'll look to continue his hot start next week against Tri-City.
Michael Turconi struck once again in the 7th inning, with an RBI-Single that scored Gabby Martinez as they took back the 6 run lead. In the 8th inning for the Ems Dilan Rosario got hit by a pitch and the leadoff man for Eugene, Grant McCray, was able to drive a baseball to the opposite field and over the fence for the 2-run home run. It was McCray's 8th homer of the season.
Both teams were held scoreless the next frame and the Canadians took the game by a final score of 7-3. Pitcher Seth Lonsway was a bright spot today for the Ems. Pitching 2.2 innings of relief, he allowed 2 hits and 2 walks and struck out 5 and didn't give up a run. After he loaded up the bases with no outs he was able to work out of the jam without giving up a run. Lonsway moved to the bullpen a couple of weeks ago and the move looks great so far.
The Ems now move to 26-25 on the season and sit a game and a half out of first place. They'll look to stay in the 1st half title race in the Northwest as they're set to take on the Dust Devils for a 6-game series starting on tuesday.
