July 14, 2022 - Northwest League (NWL)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
The Emeralds give up eight runs in the ninth inning to the Spokane Indians and fall 0-2 in the series.
Eugene started the game strong with Nick Swiney on the mound. In his five-inning outing, he allowed two hits, four walks, no hits, and no runs.
The Emeralds jumped on the board first thanks to a Carter Aldrete home run in the third inning. First-baseman Luis Toribio followed Aldrete by sending another one over the right-center field fence.
In the fifth inning, Toribio doubled on a line drive to right field, and Aldrete scored once again. Toribio continued to help the Emeralds by scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field hit by right-fielder Vaun Brown. The inning ended with a home run hit by center-fielder Luis Matos to make the score 5-0.
The Indians jumped on the board in the eighth inning after third baseman Warming Bernabel hit a single to center field, which led to designated-hitter Drew Romo crossing the plate.
Spokane broke the game wide open in the top of the ninth inning. It started with a home run from catcher Ronaiker Palma. Later on in the inning, right-fielder Zac Veen doubled on a line drive to right field, and Bladimir Restituyo scored. Shortstop Julio Carreras ties the game with a double on a ground ball to center field.
First baseman Hunter Goodman kept the inning going with a single to left field, and two more runners came home. Palma hit another single as Bernabel added the eighth run for the Indians. The damage finally ended after left-fielder Mateo Gil grounded out to Emeralds' shortstop Casey Schmitt, but Braiden Ward crossed the plate in enough time to add the ninth and final run to the board.
Right-handed pitcher Brooks Crawford was given the loss tonight after allowing five hits, six runs, and one walk in his one-inning performance.
The Emeralds will have another opportunity to walk away with a win tomorrow night for game three of the series. Mason Black is expected to take the mound for Eugene, and the first pitch will take place at 6:35 p.m. P.T. The game will be available to watch on MiLB.TV.
