PORTLAND, ME - Reserve Shyron Ely scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Iowa Energy as they were defeated 106-96 by the Maine Red Claws Friday night.
The matchup between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference standings was a back and forth affair as the two teams exchanged the lead 14 times in the game.
Iowa trailed by five points entering the 3rd quarter, but scored the first six points of the 4th quarter to take a one point lead. With the score tied at 86-86 late in the quarter, Maine went on an 11-2 run fueled by five points from guard Maurice Ager to pull ahead for good.
Ely, who came into the game with career highs of 12 points and 5 rebounds, had the best game of his career as he kept Iowa within striking distance throughout.
The Energy were led by Curtis Stinson's 25 point, 10 assist game while Earl Barron added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Iowa's trio of Pat Carroll, Jeff Trepagnier and Cartier Martin combined for only 8 points on 3 of 27 shooting in the game. The loss, which is Iowa's fifth in its last six games, drops the Energy to 31-11 on the season.
Maine was led by Morris Almond, who finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds. The Red Claws improve to 24-15 on the season.
The two teams will square off in a rematch Sunday in Maine. The Energy return home on St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) as they host Dakota at 7 PM. For tickets, visit www.iowanba.com or call 515-564-8550.
