Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON â Rox playoff hopes suffered a crushing blow Sunday when the Rox were shut out on both ends of a doubleheader, 1-0 and 7-0, by the Elmira Pioneers before a crowd of 4,475 at Campanelli Stadium.
An unearned run spelled doom for the Rox in the opener. An error by Rox third baseman Jake Daubert was followed by an RBI double by Pioneers right fielder Yuji Nerei, breaking a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and pinning Rox starter Brian Buchanan with the loss. Buchanan, who went 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out five, saw his record drop to 11-4.
The Rox managed just four hits off Pioneers starter Robbie Morrison, who did not walk a batter and struck out four. Chad Stewart (2-for-3) had two of the four Rox hits in the first game.
The Rox offense had even more difficulty in the nightcap, managing just three hits off Joe Van Gorder, who walked one and struck out five in matching Morrison's feat of going the seven-inning distance.
The Rox did not advance a runner to third base the entire night until their final at-bat of the second game, when singles by Kris Zacuto and Daubert put runners on the corners, but Van Gorder struck out Brian Jones to end the game.
The Pioneers broke open the second game with four runs in the second inning off Scott Martin, the big blow a three-run home run by Jason Bryan.
Scott Martin, who went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walk, striking out two, dropped his record to 5-6.
Kris Zacuto had two of the Rox three hits in the nightcap.
With 13 games to be played, the Rox trail the Bangor Lumberjacks, who swept a doubleheader from the Aces Sunday, by six games in the wild-card race.
The Rox are off Monday and travel to North Shore for a three-game series with the Spirit beginning Tuesday before returning home Friday for the last home series of the regular season, against the Aces. Tickets are available at the Rox box office, by calling (508) 559-7070, or by visiting www.brocktonrox.com.
