El Paso Diablos News Release
Shaun Ellis put the team on his back as his complete game victory lifted El Paso to a 5-1 win over the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Fair Grounds Field on Wednesday night. It is the second complete game for a Diablos starter this year and it brings to an end a six game losing streak.
Shuan Ellis was stellar as he shut down the Captains on just six hits, four walks and five strike outs. Ellis (8-1) picks up his eighth win of the season which ties him for the league lead in wins. Since being named to the All Star team he has been fantastic. Over his last two starts on this current road trip Ellis has allowed just two runs in 16 innings of work. He has allowed only 11 hits in that time.
The Captains would break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning on a Jorge Alvarez lead-off home run. El Paso came right back and scored five straight. They scored three in the seventh before added two more in the eighth. In the seventh Jeff Vincent brought in one with a single and Hector Bernal added two more with a double. In the eighth one run scored on a wild pitch with the final run being brought in on a Vincent RBI double.
El Paso struck for 12 hits in the game. They had a tough time getting to Cody Kelley (1-1) who pitched six inning and left two runners aboard in the seventh, both of which scored as he was tagged with the loss. He allowed just two runs in his six innings on seven hits and eight strike outs. Jeff Vincent led the hitting attack going 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Arnoldo Ponce, Mike Provencher, and Bryon Smith also turned in two hit ball games.
The Diablos can now go for the series win on Thursday. El Paso sends William Buzhardt (1-0, 10.92) to the mound against former Diablo Cardoza Tucker who is making his first start with Shreveport. First pitch is slated for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning into ESPN 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
