Elks Win Pitcher's Duel 2-1
August 4, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
Bellingham, WA - Garrett Anderson pitched 5 and 2/3 innings of 1 run ball, and the Bend Elks scored 2 runs in the 5th inning to defeat the Bellingham Bells 2-1.
The game was scoreless through the first 4 innings as Anderson and Bellingham starter Nate Cole were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first 4 innings, as both were at the top of their game. Until the 5th inning, the only blemishes in Cole's line score were the 2 walks issued to Seth Spivey and Turner Gill in the 2nd and 3rd innings respectively, while Anderson had given up only 3 hits during that same time frame.
In the top of the 5th inning, Bend (29-18) Cullen O'Dwyer singled, the first hit for the Elks in the game. Grant Newton dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Cole on the mound, giving Bend 1st and 2nd with nobody out. With Kyle Giusti at the plate, Cole's pick off throw went wide of Bells 1stbaseman Eric Angerer, allowing O'Dwyer to score from 2nd and Newton to advance to 3rd, giving the Elks the 1-0 lead. After Giusti struck out, Landon Cray singled to score Newton, and Bend lead 2-0.
That would be enough for Bend and starter Garrett Anderson (3-1) who ended up going 5 and 2/3, giving up 1 run on 7 hits while striking out a batter. Anderson left with a 2 run lead, giving away to Michael Jordan with men on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. But Christopher Beall singled the first pitch from Jordan back up the middle to score Alex Calbick from 2nd base, and the Bells (25-23) cut the deficit to one.
That would be all the scoring the rest of the way, though the Bells would threaten in the 9th as David Murrillo came on in the bottom of the 9th inning, issuing walks to Johnny Farrington, and got to 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs before Murrillo got Johnny Sewald to strike out to end the game, picking up his 3rd save of the summer in the process.
Elks and Bells will play the rubber match of their 3 game series on Sunday, first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
