Elks Defeat Bells 5-3, Take Series

August 4, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks earned their 30th win of the summer in West Coast League play by scoring 2 runs in the 1st and 3 runs in the 2nd innings, coasting to a 5-3 victory.

Bend (30-18) jumped to an early lead against Bells starter Andrew Freter as Zach Close singled to open up the game, Seth Spivey walked to put men at 1st and 2nd with one out and Turner Gill delivered an RBI single to score close and make it 1-0. Derek Dixon followed Gill to the plate and was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Cullen O'Dwyer, who came through with the RBI single and the Elks lead 2-0.

The Elks added to their lead in the 2nd as Seth Spivey delivered a 2 run double with 1 out to score Landon Cray and Jordan Aboites, and was brought home on an RBI single from Dixon, his WCL leading 34th RBI of the summer, and Bend lead 5-0.

That was more than enough for Elks starter Clay Gartner (5-2) who pitched 6 innings on Sunday against the Bells (25-25), giving up 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 3 in earning his 5th win of the summer, his longest start since pitching 7 innings against Kitsap on June 19th. The only run for Bellingham against Gartner was a solo home run by Bells designated hitter Ryan Kirby in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 5-1 Elks.

The score held their until the Elks had trouble closing it out in the 9th inning for the 2nd straight night. This time, it was Cam Booser that had to battle through the 9th. After Alex Calbick grounded out to open the 9th, Kirby was hit by a pitch, pinch hitter Michael Annunziata hit a 2 run home run to cut the Elks lead to 2. Eric Angerer then came to the plate and was hit by a pitch, Jack Meggs reached on an error by Jordan Aboites, who immediately reacted and was ejected from the game. That forced left fielder Zach Close to come in and play 2nd base for the Elks, and after pinch hitter Trent Chatterton drew a walk to load the bases with 2 outs, and Johnny Sewald proceeded to hit a groundball right to Close, who came up with it and threw him out to end the game.

The Bend Elks will head to Corvallis to begin a 3 game series with the Knights on Monday in a series that will likely decide the winner of the West Coast League southern division. First pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m., fans can tune into the game by going to bendelks.com and click "listen live" on the right side of the page.
