ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford second baseman Shaff Elkouri is out for the rest of the year, the RiverHawks announced Monday.

Elkouri suffered torn ligaments in his right ankle during the RiverHawks' game against Windy City last Friday, according to X-rays. The damage will require surgery, infield coach Jake Ciarrachi said.

Because the injury is season-ending, the RiverHawks released Elkouri and signed infielder Chris Rich. The rookie from Arkansas State was 1-for-5 in three games with the Evansville Otters earlier this season.

In the eighth inning of Friday's game, former RiverHawk Doug Schutt stole second base as Elkouri leaped to take a high throw. Elkouri landed on Schutt, twisting his ankle at a severe angle.

Elkouri was hitting .319 with three home runs and 19 RBI. He had 13 multi-hit games this season.

The third-year RiverHawk injured his left ankle last month. On June 23, he collided at home plate with Evansville catcher Jud Kindle in the second inning and left the game. He was released on July 1 and re-signed following the all-star break.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
