
Eldred's HR Blast Lifts Knights Over Tides

FORT MILL, S.C. - April 29, 2008 - Spongebob Squarepants has nothing on Charlotte 1B Jeff Eldred. In front of over 3,000 screaming 5th graders and with the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th, Eldred sent the crowd of kids into a frenzy with a two-run home run to give the Knights a 3-1 victory over Norfolk.
The Knights got another strong pitching performance from Lance Broadway (3-1, 1.25) who went eight innings, giving up just five hits and striking out six. Jason Childers (1-0, 1.00) came in to relieve Broadway and picked up his first win of the season.
Jim Miller (0-1, 7.71) took the loss for the Tides.
The students took in today's game as part of the ALLSTAR program that the Knights began last season. ALLSTAR-Achieving Leadership & Life Skills Through Active Resistance-is a program that teaches children the harmful effects of drug abuse in an exciting and stimulating environment The purpose of the ALLSTAR program is to educate area 5th grade students on the dangers of substance abuse and the affect it has not only one their lives, but the lives of those around them. Before the game, students took in several exhibits, demonstrations and other educational programs happening in and around the concourse and field. Charlotte Knights players, coaches and staff were on hand to provide personal testimony and positive encouragement to the students to help them make responsible decisions when it comes to substance abuse.
The two teams will wrap-up their series on Wednesday. Game time is 11:15 a.m. Charlotte will send Wes Whisler (4-0, 0.83) to the mound. Norfolk will start Hayden Penn (1-1, 5.52).
