Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 17, 2013) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators built an early lead, but the Delmarva Shorebirds pounded out eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-4 win and a series sweep in front of 3,303 fans on Education Day at CMC-NorthEast Stadium today.
With Delmarva down 3-1 entering the fifth, eight of their first nine batters reached base safely. Joel Hutter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home a run. Gregory Lorenzo and Creede Simpson collected run-scoring singles, the latter chasing Intimidators starter Jake Cose from the game and giving the Shorebirds a 4-3 lead.
Braulio Ortiz took the mound in relief of Cose and saw Wynston Sawyer turn his first offering into a two-run double to break the game open. Adrian Marin added a two-run single off Ortiz, building a 9-4 lead before the inning came to an end.
Tom Winegardner earned a win in his season debut, working 2 1/3 relief innings, allowing a run on two hits. Cose (2-1) endured his first loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.
Intimidators center fielder Adam Heisler jump-started the offense in the bottom of the first with a home run (1). Michael Johnson followed with a triple, his first of the year, and two batters later Rangel Ravelo singled to drive him in. Leading 2-0, Kannapolis loaded the bases in the bottom of the first as each of the first five Intimidators to bat reached base safely, but Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman bounced back to strand three runners in the opening frame.
Guzman went on to retire nine straight, including striking out the side in the second inning. Delmarva toe-dipped onto the scoreboard in the second inning when Sawyer reached on an error and later scored on a Nik Balog single.
Zach Fisher led off the bottom of the fourth for Kannapolis with a triple and scored on Heisler's base hit for a 3-1 advantage. Fisher finished the game 2-4 with two runs scored while Heisler went 2-5 with two RBI, extending his on-base streak to 13 games.
Brandon Hardin and Michael Gunter combined to work three scoreless innings of relief for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators hit the road in the morning for a four-game series at Augusta starting Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The team returns to CMC- NorthEast Stadium on Tuesday, April 23, to begin a three-game series against the Rome Braves.
