Edwards' 29 Not Enough as T-Birds Fall to Red Claw

South Padre Island, TX - Shane Edwards scored 29 points, but it was not enough as the New Mexico Thunderbirds fell to the Maine Red Claws by a score of 98-97 on Tuesday night at the NBA Development League Showcase.

For the second straight night the Thunderbirds fell behind in the first quarter, when Maine jumped out to a 14-7 lead. The Red Claws led the entire first quarter and held a 32-27 lead after one quarter.

The Thunderbirds opened the second quarter by scoring nine consecutive points to take their first lead of the game, 36-32. The Thunderbirds extended the lead to as many as seven points, but the Red Claws closed the second quarter on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 52-50 at the half.

After a back and forth third quarter the Thunderbirds still held a two-point lead heading into the final quarter.

With Maine leading 91-89 in the fourth quarter, the T-Birds went on a 7-0 to take their largest lead of the quarter. Maine answered by scoring six of the next seven points to tie up the game with 1:26 remaining. Then with 45.1 seconds left, Tiny Gallon hit one of two free throws to give the Red Claws the lead for good.

Five Red Claws scored in double digits, led by Gallon who had 19 points.

The Thunderbirds will return home to the Santa Ana Star Center for two games against the Tulsa 66ers on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
