Edmonton Oil Kings Can't Tame The Tigers

Medicine Hat, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings are still looking for that elusive first win against the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Tigers are a perfect 10 and 0 against the Oil Kings since Edmonton's return to the WHL including Wednesday night's 5 - 4 heart breaking loss for the visitors. Veterans Brett Breitkreuz and Brandon Lockerby each had 2 points and the powerplay connected a couple of times but it still wasn't enough as Edmonton native Sean Ringrose was the spoiler scoring the game winning goal early in the third period after a wild start to this one.

The two teams sawed off the first period with a pair of goals each. Medicine Hat opened the scoring with a goal from John Stampohar. Springside Saskatchewan native Brett Breitkreuz scored two goals himself in the opening stanza including a powerplay goal and the Oil Kings even had the lead at the midway point in the period. The Tigers would tie it up with a powerplay goal of their own. Another Edmonton native, Tyler Ennis scored his second of the year to make the score 2 - 2 heading into the break. Edmonton had the lead on the shot clock 12 - 7 at that point.

The see saw battle continued into the second period. Jace Coyle scored to give the lead back to the Tigers. Then a pair of rookies hooked up for their first WHL points on the same scoring play to tie it at 3. T.J. Foster scored his first career goal with Colton Stephenson earning the assist. That seemed to give the Oil Kings a bit of a boost.

Edmonton would pull out in front less than a minute later thanks to a powerplay goal from Jeff Lee. The highlight of that 4th goal was the cross-ice pass from rookie defenseman Mark Pysyk. Tyler Hlookoff picked up the other assist and it was 4 - 3 and the game wasn't even at the midway point yet.

The Tigers responded :34 seconds later. Brennan Bosch netted his third goal of the year and 4th point against the Oil Kings this season. Rookie goalie Cam Lanigan was on the hook for the first 3 goals Edmonton allowed and Dalyn Flette came in relief. The second period was also highlighted by a heavyweight tilt between Edmonton's Drew Nichol and Medicine Hat's John Stampohar where Nichol landed the big blows early to earn the decision.

The Tigers would get the last laugh however when Sean Ringrose scored 4:15 into the third period preserving Medicine Hat's perfect 10 and 0 record against the Oil Kings dating back to last season.

Edmonton's record slips to 4-4-1-0 while the Tigers improve to 4-2-2-1. Next up for the Oil Kings will be a visit to Rexall Place from the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night. The evening's festivities will feature World Hot Dog Eating Champ Joey Chestnut who will be putting on a demonstration in the second period. Game time is 7 o'clock.
