Kingston Frontenacs News Release

The Kingston Frontenacs (27-12-3-0) and Ottawa 67's (20-22-1-3) faced off on Friday night in the Limestone City with the Black and Gold taking a big 7-2 win on home ice. Francesco Arcuri had a pair of goals; Shane Wright recorded his third straight multi-point game with Jordan Frasca and Lucas Edmonds both extending point streaks to seven games as Kingston won its third consecutive a game.

It was the seventh meeting of the season between the East Division rivals with Kingston winning five of seven. The Fronts entered action one-point back of division-leading Hamilton as winners of two straight. The Bulldogs also won on Friday night keeping Kingston one-point back of the division lead.

Former 67's Alec Belanger faced his old mates for the first time after being acquired in a trade by General Manager Kory Cooper. "It was funny at the start looking across in warmup, looking across seeing them, said Belanger after the game. "I've played in this building as a visitor a few times. "I'm happy with the win, and thought I had a good game and the team played well."

Freshman netminder Aidan Spooner got his seventh start for Luca Caputi in the Fronts crease facing 24 shots for his sixth OHL victory. Ottawa replied with fellow rookie Max Donoso starting before being relieved after 40 minutes by Will Cranley.

First Period

Kingston took a two-goal lead after twenty minutes in an evenly played period with the Fronts ahead 11-6 on the shot clock.

An early powerplay chance for Kingston came just 32 seconds in when Lucas Peric was hit in front of the Kingston net by Tyler Boucher, but the 17th-ranked Ottawa penalty killing units held the home team off.

It was 1-0 when Fronts point-leader Lucas Edmonds (22) and Chris Thibodeau hooked up on a good shift culminating in the opening goal off a deflected shot. Edmonds made it seven consecutive games with points after firing a shot that bounced past Max Donoso in the visitor net. Tommy Budnick and Thibodeau earned assists on the opening strike at 13:48.

Kingston went up a pair after Zayde Wisdom made a great play on a puck in at the 67's blueline keeping the play onside to setup Wright (20) for the 2-0 strike in the final moments of the frame. The captain took the feed down low from Wisdom and deked forehand past the left pad of Donoso becoming Kingston's fifth twenty-goal scorer at 18:27.

Second period

Despite giving up a goal and having just two shots through 15 minutes of the middle period, the Black and Gold managed to match the first periods' two-goal output leaving with a 4-1 lead after forty minutes.

The Barber-poles came out hard to start the frame forcing Spooner into two big saves in succession in the opening seconds before both teams scored in less than a minute. First, Kingston went up 3-0 when Jordan Frasca (31) lit the lamp beating the Ottawa netminder with a five-hole shot from a wide angle. Jake Murray assisted on the goal at 2:04 extending Frasca's point streak to seven games.

The 67's quickly struck back making it 2-1 just 54 seconds later on a Brady Stonehouse (13) goal after the forward benefitted from a soft puck making its way through two players to set up a breakaway chance on the Fronts net. He beat Spooner for the opening Ottawa strike with a shot over the glove assisted by Luca Pinelli and Vsevolod Gaidamak at 2:58.

Kingston got its second man-advantage with former Ottawa defenceman Lucas Peric hitting the visitor's crossbar with a point shot on the best scoring chance.

Stonehouse and former Ottawa teammate Alec Belanger got roughing minors with eight minutes left in front of the Ottawa bench. Frontenacs rookie Nathan Poole made a thunderous hit on Matthew Mayich at the Ottawa blueline as one of many stiff checks labelled by Kingston forwards late in the frame.

A hit post with 3:26 left kept Ottawa at a two-goal deficit and would go down by three minutes later after Edmonds (23) scored his second of the game with one minute left on a wrist-shot from the top of the right circle beating Donoso low for the 4-1 goal. The Assisted by Peric and Wright at 19:00.

Third Period

Will Cranley relieved Donoso in the Ottawa net to open the final stanza. Kingston would score three goals on the way to a 7-2 win.

Seven minutes in, the 67's cut the deficit to two when Thomas Johnston (13) took a puck to the net and had the initial shot bounce back of himself allowing him to redirect it past Spooner. Thomas Sirman earned an assist at 6:55 on the 4-2 marker.

Kingston put the pressure back on the visitors scoring twice in 41 seconds. Jackson Stewart (2) scored with a nice shot from the slot after being set up by Wright and Paul Hughes at 11:07. Arcuri (23) then made it 6-2 at 11:48 with a wrist shot after good pressure by Edmonds got him the puck at the top of the right circle. Edmonds got his OHL leading 51st assist and Frasca added a helper for his third multi-point game in a row.

A 1:37 five-on-three for Frontenacs saw Arcuri (24) score his second of the period after wiring a shot on a one-timer from a feed past Cranley for a 7-2 lead on a powerplay marker assisted by Frasca and Edmonds at 15:49 to finish the scoring.

Alec Belanger used to be on a 67's team that handled Kingston well but is now part of a turnaround for the Friends versus Ottawa. "I've been on some really good teams since I've been in the OHL, and now to be on a great team again on the other side; I am very happy about that," he said.

After success as a 67, the durable two-way defenceman is enjoying being on the other side with the wins now. "I'm going to do whatever I can for us to win this year. There are no hard feelings to the 67's and loved everyone in that organization and met some good guys and had some great coaches", said the rearguard after the game.
