
Edinburg Grabs Game 1, Casares Strikes Out Side In the Ninth

San Angelo, Texas--- Bryan Frichter stood at third base representing the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Colts trailed by a run. Edinburg (24-25) closer Kelly Casares then struck out three consecutive Colts to end the contest as San Angelo (34-15) fell to the Roadrunners with a final score of 4-3.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Carlos Hereaud doubled off the base of the wall to left field. Hunter Owen singled to Center bringing in Hereaud, the Roadrunners grabbed a 1-0 lead.
Edinburg added to that lead in the top of the third. After a two out walk to Hereuad, Owen added to his RBI total homering to left field, his third RBI of the game. Roadrunners extended their lead to three.
The bottom of the fifth inning began with a walk to Hank Lanto. The first pitch thrown to Ronnie Gaines was deposited over the left field fence, his seventh homer of the season, bringing the Colts within a run.
The Roadrunners again extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Colts starter Kenny Elkind faced Vincent Blue with a runner at second base. Blue laced a single to left center field scoring Bryan Smith, Roadrunners led 4-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hunter Jobes connected on his third single of the game. After a walk to Nick Mahin, Butch Ballez dropped down a sacrifice bunt pushing runners to second and third base. With Jobes at third, Edinburg committed a wild pitch, Hunter crossed home plate as the Colts trailed by a run.
Edinburg Closer Kelly Casares entered the ninth inning as the Roadrunners clung to a one run lead. Frichter led off the inning with a walk. Landreth came to bat representing the winning run. Frichter, the league leader in stolen bases, stole second base for his 24th of the season. With the tying run on second, Landreth would be retired on strikes. With one away, Frichter nabbed third base. The tying run stood at third, Josh Collazo and Hunter Jobes would come to the plate. Casares was able to get both hitters to go down on strikeouts. Edinburg nailed down game one of the series, 4-3.
Roadrunners starter Danny Rondon (3-0) earned the victory working six innings allowing just two earned runs. Kenny Elkind (3-1) suffered his first loss as a Colt going five innings, giving up seven hits and four eared runs. Jacob Ramos pitched three shutout innings, Brett Lester threw one scoreless inning.
San Angelo and Edinburg will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field. It will be San Angelo Colts Baseball Card Team Sets giveaway at the ballpark sponsored by Sports Maniac. The first 1,000 fans will receive Colts baseball cards. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Kemps pre-game show will begin at 6:50 pm.
