San Angelo Colts News Release
Amarillo, TX---The Colts (34-14) had a successful road trip in winning three out of four games against the Amarillo Dillas (25-23). In game one of the doubleheader, San Angelo could not hold the lead and lost in extra innings, 11-10. The nightcap was a different story as the team defeated the Dillas 6-5.
In game one, the Colts got out to a first inning lead as Jason Landreth connected on his twelth homerun of the season, a two-run shot that cleared the scoreboard in left center field.
San Angelo extended their lead to three in the third inning. With two outs Jason Diaz singled and later stole second base. Bryan Frichter tripled to right field, which scored Diaz and gave the Colts a 3-0 advantage. Frichter was 4-4 in the ballgame adding a triple, two doubles, and a single.
Drew Coffey shutout the Dillas threw his first three innings of work. In the fourth, however, the scoreless night was broken up by a Trent Lockwood homer to right. It was his 11th dinger of the season to cut the lead to two.
The Colts added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning. San Angelo headed into the final frame with a 5-1 lead.
Drew Coffey took the mound for a chance at his first complete game. With two outs and two runners on, Keanon Simon doubled to knock in two. Andrew Wong followed with a double making it a one run game. Coffey was removed handing the game over to the bullpen. By the time Terrance McClain came to the plate, Jacob Ramos' night was already over and Jameson Maj allowed the game tying hit to the cleanup hitter.
San Angelo responded valiantly by putting up five in the eighth. Diaz walked before Frichter doubled. Jason Landreth was intentionally walked; but it did not matter. Josh Collazo made Amarillo pay with an RBI single which advanced runners to second and third. After Nick Mahin hit into a fielders choice and Hunter Jobes struck out, Butch Ballez drove all three base runners plateward with a double. The Colts shortstop eventually scored after a wild pitch pushed him to third and Ronnie Gaines reached on an error.
Amarillo got the last laugh, though, by putting up six in the bottom of the frame. Five straight batters reached, against losing pitcher Tom Martin (0-1), before an out was recorded. McClain tied the contest with a two-run triple and Justin Wenger delivered the game-winning single. Coby Mavroulis (2-0) earned the victory in pitching the final .2 innings for Amarillo.
The Colts jumped out to a first inning lead in game two as Ronnie Gaines began the game with a double and Diaz dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move him to third base. Frichter doubled to score Gaines and the Colts led 1-0. Jason Landreth served a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Nick Mahin contributed with an RBI single in the same frame. The road team earned a 3-0 lead.
San Angelo added another three runs in the second inning. With Diaz and Gaines at second and third base, Frichter lined a single to left field scoring both runners. On the throw, Frichter advanced to second base. The next batter, Landreth, sent a single to left field scoring Frichter.
In spite of six-run cushion for the Colts, the Dillas continued to fight. Amarillo's offense collected five runs and made the game interesting heading to the seventh.
Chace Vacek was handed the ball in the final frame to earn the save. With a runner at third base, Trent Lockwood lined a shot to first. Josh Collazo made a one hop diving stop, flipped to Vacek and the Colts nailed down the victory, 6-5.
San Angelo comes back home for an eight-game home stretch starting Friday against the Edinburg Roadrunners. This is the only four game set between these two clubs at Foster Field. The game is slated for a 7:05 first pitch. You can listen to the action on KCLL COOL 100.1 FM or by going online to sanangelocolts.com
