
Colts extend first place lead, others continue battling for playoff spots

The San Angelo Colts continue increasing their first place lead over the other ballclubs in the United League Baseball and going into Friday's games are out front by nine games at 34-14.
The Colts split a doubleheader on Thursday, losing to the Amarillo Dillas by one run in extra innings, then winning by one in the second game. The Colts took three of four with the Dillas and have won eight of their last 10 games.
The Colts begin a four-game home stand with the Edinburg Roadrunners.
The Dillas cling onto second place at 25-23 and were to begin a four game series with the third place Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, who are two games behind them at 23-25.
The Dillas are 5-5 in their last 10 games and the WhiteWings are 6-4.
Also at 23-25 are the Edinburg Roadrunners, who are 5-5 in their last 10 starts. They are followed by the Coastal Bend Thunder (22-26), who dropped eight of their last 10 games. The Laredo Broncos are 17-31 and won four of their last 10.
The Thunder travel to Laredo for four games.
The Colts also still have the best hitting in the league in Brian Frichter, who is batting .441, and Jason Landreth, the third best slugger at .357. Teammate Butch Bellez has moved into the top 10, at .322.
They also have the top hurlers, Chandler Barnard, who at 9-1 is on his way to setting a new ULB pitching record; Ezequiel Astacio, 6-1; and Brian Henschel, who is 6-3 and has the league's top ERA at 1.97.
As a whole, the Colts pitchers are 3.67, another first.
Landreth also leads in home runs with 13, Trent Lockwood of Amarillo has 11 and Laredo's Argelis Nunez has eight.
Landreth leads in RBIs with 52, Lockwood has 46, Amarillo's Terrance McClain has 39 and Nunez has 38.
The Colts still lead in team batting, but have dropped below .300, barely, at .297. Second is Amarillo, .293, followed by Laredo, .280; Rio Grande Valley, .278; Edinburg, .267; and Coastal Bend, .251.
The Dillas actually have the most players, four, among the top 10 in hitting.
They are Terrance McClain, second with a .360 average; Carlos Figueroa, fourth, .340; Simon Keanon, fifth, .339; and Stanzel Smith, sixth, .338.
Other top 10 hitters include:
Nunez, .337; Robert Matlock, Edinburg, .335; and Brian Nichols, Rio Grande Valley, .333.
Frichter leads in stolen bases, with 23, followed by Dustin Smith, Coastal Bend, 22.
WhiteWings closer Julio Santana has the most saves, 13, followed by Chase Vacek with nine.
Edinburg has the second best ERA at 4.15, followed by Coastal Bend, 4.45; Amarillo, 4.91; Laredo, 4.99; and Rio Grande Valley, 5.31.
