ZEBULON, NC - Wilmington's Corey Ray struck out eight and held the Mudcats to just one run while falling one out shy of a complete game as the Blue Rocks won game one of Tuesday's doubleheader 9-1 at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.

Ray (8-6, 4.36) held the Mudcats (47-86, 18-45) without a hit through the third and had faced just one over the minimum while striking out five over three scoreless. Luis Valenzuela broke up Ray's no-hit bid with a infield single behind the mound in the fourth, but Ray did not allow another hit until Jordan Edgerton hit a solo home run with two outs in the seventh.

Edgerton's home run in the seventh cut the lead to 9-1, but ended up being the only run for the Mudcats in game one of Tuesday's series opening doubleheader. His home run was his fifth of the season, his first since July 26 and came on his 23rd birthday.

The Blue Rocks (50-82, 23-40) struck first with two runs and two hits in the first off Carolina starter Wes Parsons to take an early 2-0 lead. Parsons (0-2, 4.50) started the game by walking Cody Jones and then gave up a RBI double to Anderson Miller. Luis Villegas later drove in the second run with a two-out single to center to give the Blue Rocks the early advantage.

Miller was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Blue Rocks in their game one, series opening victory. Robert Pehl also drove in three and was 3-for-4 with two runs. Villegas scored twice and was 2-or-3 with one batted in.

Parsons eventually recovered and held Wilmington scoreless from the second through the fifth, before finding trouble again in the sixth. Wilmington rallied for three off Parsons and reliever Jimmy Moran in the sixth and later added four more in the seventh to take a 9-0 lead.

Parsons struck out three, walked three and allowed five runs and nine hits over five and 1/3 innings while taking the loss.

Moran followed Parsons in the sixth and allowed two inherited runners to score. He also gave up all four Wilmington runs in the fourth and finished with four runs allowed over an inning and 2/3 in the game one loss.

Ray fell an out shy of a complete game shutout after allowing Edgerton's homer in the seventh. Reliever Sam Lewis followed Ray in the final frame and finished the game for the Blue Rocks.

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. First established in 1991, the two-time Southern League Champion Carolina Mudcats are in their 26th consecutive season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C.
